Pairing time!

What is your favorite non-traditional drink to pair with a meal? One of my favorite weeknight cooks is Dave Chang's pan roasted mussels. When I make it, I love to serve it with sake instead of wine. I also have a hard time serving burgers with anything other than ales, but that's more of a me problem. So what's your go to other than Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon?

I love a spicy bloody mary with a filet mignon. Obvious pairing of tomato and beef. I love the texture of the meat, but it does lack a bit in flavor. The cocktail brings out something in that cut of beef. Go figure.

It may seem weird, but in most cases I prefer to drink water with my meals. I will enjoy a beer or a wine/cocktail after or during the appetizer but for the entree I prefer to just have plain old water. I think it allows me to savor the meal more and not feel like i'm getting bombarded with too many flavors. I've never really been big on pairings.

These days, Devon scrumpy (cider) with… well, anything. If I can get my hands on it. Or whatever non-American-style, non-crisp, non-clear, non-hyper-malic-apple-juice cider I can find.
