Circulator/Thermapen Calibration

Hello Everyone,

I own two circulators and a thermapen, each of which is supposedly very accurate. I decided to test each of them recently in the same water bath and got three different temperature readings (see photo). Any advice on calibrating these devices? Thanks in advance!

Dave Arnold suggests calibrating your circulators by placing them in an ice bath (with a ton of ice) and setting the temperature of the circulator below 32F/0C, which keeps the heater from switching on. It should read 0C (if you're using enough ice). If it doesn't, you'll know how far off your circulator is.

Start with the Thermapen in an ice bath. Use lots of crushed ice in the water. You know this will be 0°C.

Then follow the calibration procedure on the Anova site and test each unit seperately. They recommend covering the water bath to minimize temperature fluctuations, test multiple times, and not to adjust temps until you are certain the system has stabilized.
