Food Grade Teflon / Non-Stick Cooking Sprays

Hello Chefsteps,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with food grade non-stick cooking sprays. I have an old waffle iron that I would like to use regularly, however waffles don't release from the iron mold very easily. I've seen spray on teflon products such as this and was wondering if anyone has any experience with these items. Whether they actually work, how long the coating lasts, safety concerns, etc.

On a related note, does anyone have any recommendations for rust removal? There are tiny rust spots that I'd like to remove, I've heard a diluted phosphoric acid solution might do the trick. I was even considering just soaking in Coca-Cola.

I looked into NSF silicone sprays and what I've come across is that 99% of them will be approved for being in inadvertent contact with food but no companies seem to want to outright say that it is safe to use in direct cooking applications. Now does that mean they're unsafe? Who knows. I couldn't find any applicable Teflon sprays in my search but maybe your google-fu will be better than mine.

JD, I had an iron with a similar problem. It was an old aluminum commercial version, and it was never nonstick. My best suggestion is to clean it as best as you can, season it with oil on a paper towel, then make sure you waffle mix has melted butter or oil to allow the waffles to release easier. Also, I used a long thin wooden skewer to get any parts of the waffle that were sticking to release.

If the irons are removable (mine were) you can season them much like cast iron. I brushed mine with flaxseed oil, rubbed off the excess, put them into a hot oven for 45 min or so, then turned off the oven and let them cool. Repeated two times and haven't had to repost since. Waffles come off perfectly. There are a few threads out there about reseasoning old waffle irons, try google. If your irons aren't removable, well, good luck.
