Microwave to warm plates
ajcampelli
I have read conflicting evidence as to whether or not it is safe to use a microwave to warm microwave-safe plates (for the plates or the microwave itself). Does Chefsteps have a view on this given the recent article on microwaves?

I hope there's no risk, as that's how I warm my plates.

Why would there be a problem if the plates are microwave safe? Just don't leave them going for an hour and you'll be fine.

I have thought about this too. I use the microwave to warm my plates but it seems like it take a lot of time (energy) to get them warm. More time than if you are reheating something. It makes me feel like there should be something on the plate, like a wet towel or something. Maybe putting a wet towel under it....

It's generally not recommended to run a microwave empty because there's nothing to absorb the energy and it can end up damaging the magnetron. I would think that a plate that is 'microwave safe' has relatively low absorption of energy in the microwave, and could result in the same issue. That energy has to go somewhere.

What about a stack of plates?

If it works, I'm all for it! I'm just saying I have concerns.

Brian summarized my concerns well - it's less about the plates and more about the potential damage to the microwave.

What if you were to put some water in-between the plates? I've done this before and it worked, but wonder if I damaged the microwave?

I've done this many times, not a problem. You don't run it for 10 minutes, just 1 or 2. I usually do a stack of plates.
