Smoking gun

Does anyone know of good alternative to a smoking gun for cold smoking? I don't think I have the need for a smoking gun, which retails over $100 if I want to be able to use it once in a while. I attended a kitchen class that showcase some modernist techniques and the teacher had a small appliance that looked like a bong that he used. Could it have really been a bong or some kind of pipe. Googling a bit comes up with results of Heston doing something similar. Does anyone know a good source for something like this, but legal?

The low budget and no fuzz version for liquids: light some wood chips on a ceramic plate, turn your vessel upsid down over the smoldering wood chips. Let it fill the vessel with smoke and sit for a few minutes. This coats the vessel. When you fill it with liquid it usually impairs a nice note of smoke, strong enough if you are looking for a hint of smoke.

A blow torch and foil can give you the same effect. Place the item you want to burn on tin foil and hit with the torch until it smokes, put the smoldering package next to the item you wish to have a smoky flavor and cover.
