Anyone own a Thermomix?

Hi Folks,

In describing sous vide to a friend the other day she mentioned the Thermomix http://britishfood.about.com/od/kitchengadgets/fr/thermomix.htm that has captured the imagination of European cooks and chefs. Apparently it isn't yet available in the U.S. It's as pricey as a sous vide unit but if it delivers on promises replaces any number of equipment, including food processor, blender, juicers etc. etc.

Is this the real deal?

They are great for a lot of things. They certainly do not replace a sous vide unit or juicers. It really only replaces a blender then adds the addition of variable heat. Its kind of funny though. All commercial blenders are great for cooking things from friction. You just have to know when to hit the kill switch. They are not very precise but can be very fun to use. Great for anything that you cook, puree, and or reduce.

i have one since 8 years from now, and i have to tell you, i can't imagine to cook without it in my kitchen.

Cook, weight, steam, mix with razor blade at 10 000 rpm, and also blend or just wisk...when it's ready, timer stop everything, and let you know that you have to take a look at it until the next step. Even some of my cook, can't do all of these at the same time....lol

I have had a thermomix for about two years it's a pricey machine around 1800 in Canada but its also the best piece of kitchen equipment I have ever bought. It's an extra cook in the kitchen

For me the thermomix is something that i need in the kitchen, can make perfect bases in only little time. Is perfect for make basic preparations and basic elavorations, like sauces... for example, for make a hollandaise sauce is the best, you set the temperature and just let it make the job. really amazing stuff, i love it

I've worked in a few places that have had a Thermomix, was so impressed i bought one last year!! expensive piece of kit but great for making purees especially purees like Watercress/Spinach, it tells you the temperature of the puree when just blending so if i see it going to 50 degrees C turn it off the stop the chlorophyll green fading and keeps colour. It can be used as a thermal circulator but can only be used every 10 degrees C ie, 50,60,70,80 etc so its not really practical or exact! I cook eggs in it, works pretty good. Are these not available in the U.S?

They are available...but not as readily available as in other parts of the world. Kind of like how it's a challenge to get a Vita-Prep blender in Europe.
