There is one solution since a year on the market for chefs. www.apicbase.com this is what i use. Stands next to my coffee machine and looks funtastic too

i am with Malcolm on this one. Lighting is far more important than the camera for food. What exactly to get depends on your budget. Without knowing how much you can/want to spend it is impossible to make suggestions.

i don't think there is a "best one" I'd focus on getting good lighting setup - I.e at least one good flash, preferably 2-3, lighting is most critical. Most modern dslr/mirror less cameras today will take excellent shots of lighting is right. If I was going to have just one lens for food photography I'd prefer either Nikon 85mm tilt shift or Canon's 90mm tilt shift. The tilt shift allows changing plane of focus and is very useful in food/product shots, at a price... There are a lot of factors to take into consideration for camera/lens/lighting choice - type of photography, stills/video, budget, whether for web or large format printing (I.e posters etc)
