New Hood

I'm going to renovate my kitchen soon and the existing one doesn't have a hood so I'm in the market. I cannot vent through the ceiling. Is it possible to vent 90 degrees and out a nearby wall? If so, what other hood buying tips do you have?

Have the hood at least 3 inches each side wider than the cook top ie if you have a 30" cooktop get a 36" hood.

Check your local building code about the requirements of Make Up Air (MUA). In some cases you may need MUA with a hood as low as 400cfm. Do some searching on the dangers when you have a high cfm hood and no MUA.

If the hood is mounted on an exterior wall it is easy to vent out the back. If you are talking about the hood mounted on an interior wall, the vent line will need to run in a soffit along the wall to reach the exterior wall.

All hoods make noise, learn to live with it. Without a hood the heat, odor, grease and smoke (HOGS) will stay in your house - this is not good. HOGS lasts for ever, noise goes away when you stop cooking.
