Wood chips
Bryan_33366
A vendor at my local farmers market was selling small logs of applewood from their farm to be used for grilling, but I would like to use for smoking (since I don't have a grill). Is there a good way to create wood chips without a wood chipper? Will Home Depot do this? Anyone know?

If you are going to use "chunks" in a "smoker" outside you can use table saw to cut disks 10-20mm thick and then tap the disks with a hammer to get chucks that are smokers size - not good for a smoking gun or cooktop smoker.
If you need the sawdust size chips, the cost effective option would be to buy it that way. The big box hardware stores normally only cut wood that you purchase from them.
What every you do give the wood a good 6-9 months for it to dry and cure before use in smoking/grilling.

Throw them in the food processor! JK
I'm not sure where you're located but I would keep an eye out for landscaping trucks, they would probably do it for you for a couple bucks right in front of your house.

I use a bow saw to cut to lengths to fit into the firebox of my Big Green Egg, then a hatchet to split the small logs.

Actually, chunks are usually better for smoking because they smolder. Bury them in the charcoal where there is less oxygen. If you're on a gasser just put them near the hottest burner. More on wood here:

I'd use a small hatchet. But be careful.

I have a woods full of hardwoods and I've made the little chunks that Tim describes, but it's just too much of a hassle.
So, I sell a little firewood and use the money to buy high quality single species pellets for use in the A-Maze-N smokers (now my favorite way to smoke stuff, cold or hot) or if I'm using charcoal for bbq I'll use big chucks as meathead describes.

Yes, the tube smoker is also very good. I use a couple of them in my small smokehouse because they put out more smoke than the maze.

Actually, I have all of their smokers, even the original that burns only fine sawdust is great for cold smoking.
