All-Clad d5 Stainless-Steel Essential Pan
Corey_37766
Opinions on this? Seems like a great deal on some cookware that would normally be out of my price range.

I should note that I have a nice de Buyer saute pan, but there's no lid and it's reactive.

I think we went over this in a few other threads, I'd get a great stove instead.
If you work on a line you'd be amazed at the shit pans you have, the difference is that hot really means hot.
IKEA sells great nonstick pans, for anything else just get the regular NSF restaurant supply stuff.

Thanks.
I have an abysmal electric coil stove. I'll look into the Ikea stuff and perhaps an induction cooktop instead!

@Corey
- yup
I have just sold a couple of "investment" properties and we are looking at a new house/kitchen, my main criteria are as simple as - simple to clean / disinfect, I can staff 5 -10 people in small mise stations, I have enough power to heat normal cooking.

@Johan
- I have had this pan for quite some time now and I love it. I like it because it is very universal. I also have quite a few other d5 pans, and will continue to add to my collection in time. I will agree you don't have to spend a lot to have decent pans, but I also have cheap ones that I use as well. In my opinion it is a good deal for an All-Clad pan as some of there stuff is crazy expensive. Hope this helped!

Just to serve as a counterpoint to Johan, I too have an abysmal electric coil stove....however, I do have some great pans that I love, and feel that they make quite a difference. Sure, I'm itchy to one day have a nice cooktop/induction hob/molteni french top at home, but I think that upgrading my pans has been a good move. It just makes me want to cook more. I definitely started with shit, but I'm definitely at a point where my pans are no longer disposable, and will carry over no matter how I decide to upgrade my heat source.
Here's what I use in order of frequency used:
Sitram Profisserie 16cm sauce pans
De Buyer Mineral B 26cm fry pan
Some El Cheapo stock pot which happens to have one of those pasta strainers as well as a steamer basket.
De Buyer Oval Fish pan 32x23.5cm which has turned into my wok/large meat fry pan/roasting pan
le Creuset 4.5qt French Oven
large Lodge Cast Iron skillet
Of course, what you really need all depends on how you like to cook...this is just what has worked well for me.

Fwiw, to
@Johan
's point, I think most - if not all - of the conventional cookware they use at ChefSteps is from IKEA.

@ren
- I'm liking the le creuset french oven. I will have one in good time. De Buyer makes great products as well.

Most of our pots and pans are indeed from IKEA (hey, we're a startup!) but we do have the occasional nice pot or pan around. Mostly it's because a great Staub or Creuset pot, or the occasional piece of gleaming copper makes food look enticing.
If nice pots and pans make you want to cook more, than go for it. If you're on a budget and need pots and pans that perform just as well, then go to IKEA or a restaurant supply store.

@corey
the Williams Sonoma sales, just bring stuff down to normal pricing. Walmart has it online for a similar price year round. So don't feel pressured to buy it.

Chris makes excellent points...in the end it's still very much the wizard and not the wand.
Just to add, within the context of the original post, every pot or pan I listed costs significantly less compared to the pan being asked about.

So true, a $150,000 Steinway concert grand will never automatically make one a Vladimir Horowitz, no way, no how!
When buying pans, I don't recommend buying them without first-hand evaluation. I've made that expensive mistake more than once....apparently I'm a slow learner.....LOL!!!
I have Calphalon and All-Clad pans that I absolutely hate because the design of the handle feels awkward in my hand, where $20 Winco pans from my local restaurant supply which have a fat handle are comfortable to use.

I bought a new guitar last year that had a fret buzz. Was kinda bummed that I was going to have to take it to a luthier to grind the fret wire down a bit right out of the box. Then my buddy came over; world-class talent on the instrument. Showed it to him and picked it up and played for a bit....... no fret buzz.
Wizard not the wand, indeed...!
But I absolutely agree that if buying nice cookware makes you want to cook more, then it's worth the investment. We talked about this a bit in an earlier thread, but all of my cookware came from closeout stores (Tuesday Morning, Home Goods, Ross, etc) and restaurant supply stores. I have one pan that I bought on sale at BB&B over a decade ago. And I would echo what
@Chris
says in that a good branded Dutch oven is worth the $$.

The Kirkland Signature set from Costco has a pan similar to what your're looking at. The downside is that it also comes with 5-6 other stainless steel pots/pans which are included in the set. I purchased my set 2 years ago for ~$160.
I also purchased a dutch oven from Costco for $50. The build quality and cooking results are in the same class to those high end brand name ones.
