ThermaQ Probes

I'm about to get the ThermaQ, and I've seen recommended probes for the device, but was wondering if anyone could give recommendations from a more affordable probe resource (I've seen Auber mentioned a few times.)

My most likely uses would be for

1) Checking internal temps of meats

2) Checking temps of things like fry oil (as I don't have a fryer)

3) Sous vide

I'm not looking to make candies or things like that

If SV is on your list for use, that would be the final box "ticked". !+2 could be done well with less expensive options (but would require more babysitting).

I'm kind of seeking my "be all end all" thermometer. While the thermapen looks nice, I can't really monitor sous vide with it, or accurately temp my oven (and I'm not sure if the probe on that is adequate for temping liquids like frying oil.) that's why I'd like to get a thermaq and use different probes.

Based on my needs, what are the first ones I should snag from Auber?

The thermapen is good (I have 2) . I haven't studied auber extensively but if I recall the high temp would be required for oil and such but I'm not sure of the compatibility of various probes across their products.

I've used Auber probes (k-type) many, many times with ThermoWorks thermometers...I have several thermometers and probes.

Having said that, if you don't need a lot of bells and and whistles, I highly recommend the ThermoWorks Dot (I have two of them) with the probes for sous vide, oven, etc. They're simple, well-made, basic thermometers that are reasonably priced. I even recommend the bargain ThermoWorks Model: RT600B pocket thermometer over the ThermaPen. I find the ThermaPen to be a pain-in-the-ass in some ways. So, the ThermoWorks Dot and the pocket thermometer are what I use most....BY far!!!!

I had never even considered the Dot. Looks super simple, effective, and reasonably priced so I'll look into it more. Thanks again guys!

This is great information. Does the bag/foam leak at all when using the DOT for sous vide?

America's Test Kitchen Recommends the ChefAlarm (similar to the Dot.) The ChefAlarm also carries a 2 year warranty, so I may spend an extra $15 for this. 2 Years worry free, affordable probes, accuracy, and a recommendation from America's test kitchen should make this a quality buy!

I pulled the trigger on the ChefAlarm.

Got the thermometer, high temp probe with clip (good for roasting and fry oil,) and sous vide probe for about $60. It's not as accurate as the thermoworks k-type thermometers, and a 2 channel reader would have been nice to monitor air temp of the oven as well, but this is much more affordable and I'm not sure I need the other options (for example, I can monitor air temp with one probe before putting in the roast to calibrate my oven.)

I haven't had a problem with leakage when using the foam tape sold by JB Prince but I don't use the tape all that often...I tend to use Zip-Lock bags most of the time, with probe or not. http://www.jbprince.com/utensils/adhesive-tape-for-sous-vide.asp
