Sharpening Stones

Hey dudes & dudettes!

I'm pondering buying this set of stones (700# 1200# & 4000#). You reckon the 700 is enough to re-make the edge on my knives? They're pretty much edgeless and I think a 250# would be better to start off, but probably a 700# will do but will take longer right?

I have a 1000/6000 king wet stone. I can get a burr I'm about 15 minutes on the 1000. I highly recommend this stone, I've sharpened knives to super sharp mirror finish on this stone. Check out my video on Facebook under the hash tag #knifeskillz.

I'm curious how people with the DMT stones like them compared to traditional whetstones. Dave Arnold seems to love his, and they seem cheaper and easier to use overall.

The 700 is for taking the rough job out of the sharpening. If you have any nicks or really bad areas on your blade you use this to remove. You could get away with a 1000 and 4000. But if you truly want to get that razor sharp edge get a 6000 and a leather to strop at the end. Leather is just to take away the microscopic filings that are still on the blade.

Hey Brandon sorry for the late reply. I use my DMT, fine and extra fine first. I really like how quickly they work to renew the edge, probably about a 10th of the strokes required for the same results compared to a whetstone. But then I do use a whetstone 3000 and 8000 grit to further refine the blade. Personally I think it's the best of both. My knives are sharper than ever, I could shave with them, probably a better edge than some cheap razor blades.

Yes Alfonso, absolutely, a 250 will make it easier but you can also use the 700, actually I use a 600 to do the basic sharpening and even to repair chip pings or dents, takes longer but still very do-able, and from there I go 2000 and finally 8000.

I have a 200 stone but it's just too coarse, I use that one as a flattening stone for my other stones.
