The FCC has a hand with every single piece of communicationsemployment that is legal used in the United States of America. Now, what do you NEED to use the Joule immersion circulator? A phone. Specifically a smart phone. Why? Because it uses Wi-Fi to communicatebetween the control unit (smart phone) and the unit itself. Now you know why ChefSteps went ahead and were authorized by the FCC before creating Joule and "What the heck does the FCC have to do with cooking in my Kitchen."

Or a tablet or any device that you can install the Joule App. I understand Joule works via Bluetooth and/or WIFI, both regulated by the FCC.

Communication. Any time devices communicate, the FCC is usually involved. I have/do work with a number of med device companies and let's say I want to record muscle activity wirelessly (transmitter on skin sends muscle activity to receiver attached to PC just a few metres/yards away), the FCC gets involved. It's bogus for the most part (think of why we had to turn wifi off on our phones on a plane yet could pay for wifi during flights). So, they are playing by the rules, that's all.

To ChefSteps - Understanding why the approval from the FCC in the USA was sought because of the communication between the Joule and a media device, does that mean that you will need to obtain approval from the respective communication authorities in each International country before it can be sold to any person within that international country?

Each country has their own rules/regulations which all manufactures must comply to. Joule is built to extremely high professional grade standards, so meeting any of these requirements will easy for them.

Crickets from CS re the FCC approval status. It should be a non-issue because we're weeks out from the promised shipping date -- except that the disclaimer is there ... presumably for a PR/legal reason. To appreciate the significance, we must understand that devices which radiate radio-frequency energy (pretty much everything that runs on electricity) have to demonstrate that they don't exceed certain criteria that might cause unacceptable interference ... to communications and life-saving devices, for example. A delay in shipping because of a failure to secure an FCC stamp at this stage would definitely be an amateur faux pas, so I'll reserve judgment and assume they'll ship as promised!

First, if you'll note, there never was a promised ship date. What was said was they hope to have orders shipping by May.

I really don't follow your logic. You'll need to explain how when the government decides to withhold authorization or certification it's a private business's fault.

Ugh, an apologist. What's not to follow? Providing a May ship date while lacking an understanding of the process seems like a rookie mistake to me. It's my opinion. I'm not angry. I still want the Joule. I'll be patient. I support CS and love the website. And in retrospect I think all can agree that May probably was a realistic ship date.
