Wedding Registry

Hey Everyone,

First off, I love this site and am appreciative that it is both well done and free. I am getting married in October and one of my few responsibilities has been to set up our wedding registry. I have been reading everything on the interwebs; Amazing Ribs, America's Test Kitchen, Megan McArdle's Guide, Serious Eats, etc... I love using both the Chef Steps Store and the Amazon links in recipes to see what you like but is there a single-page list of Chef Steps recommended kitchen gear? Do you all have lists that you like?

What one-thing do you not live without? I already have most of the basics, some solid knives, cast iron pans, and a DIY water bath.

@David - The absolute first thing you should buy is a Thermapen (Chefsteps has them too).

Digital thermometer, digital scales, sharp knives, sharpening stones, sous vide cooking unit, lab sieves, chamber sealer, centrifuge. Aside from other basics like a nice, large wooden cutting board, an assortment of small and medium-sized pots and pans, these would be my priorities.

@David - congratulations! I agree with others, the Thermapen is a must (buy it here from ChefSteps). In addition to the recommendations from @Chris above, I love my VitaMIx blender and use it regularly. Get an extra carafe for it too, the smaller size is useful.

Kevin -- I'm definitely going to put a Thermapen on there. Nearly everyone recommends it. What about thermometers that measure two temps at one time and can alert you when your meat reaches temp? Thoughts? Unnecessary?

Brendan - I've seen the Modernist Cuisine list before but totally forgot about it. Thanks!

Chris - Sharp knives and a sharpening stone are two things I cannot make my mind about. The Korin store is a few blocks away from where I work and have fallen in love with the Nenox knives but would still like recommendations. Also, thoughts on getting a few stainless steel and non-stick pans? Anodized or not? I already have multiple cast iron skillets, cutting boards. Are a $800 centrifuge or chamber sealer worth it?

Jack - Definitely will try to get them to buy from here. My fiancee actually loves her friend's Vitamix and has been pushing that. Glad to hear it's great and will look into the extra carafe.

I don't think you'll find enough volume capacity in an affordable centrifuge, a vacuum chamber you'll have great use of.

I agree with Johan completely on the centrifuge. Haven't found one nearly economical that holds any reasonable volume. In answer to your question about Chamber Sealer....ABSOLUTELY!!!! They are worth their weight in gold!

I guess that's good to hear about Chamber Sealers, although, the cheapest one I can find is $700. Kind of a difficult ask for a wedding registry and tough sell to the future Mrs.
