Hey folks,
My wife and I will be spending some time in San Sabastian and Bilbao next month. Hit me with your first hand, can't miss culinary recommendations!
Much appreciated!
Frank

Other than Mugaritz?

We have a reservation at Azurmendi. Mugaritz is certainly an option. The problem is, there are so many options in the area. That is why I was seeking first hand recommendations. I'll take anything from Michelin to a local pinxto bar....anyone?

You can fall over in San Sebastián and end up in a great restaurant. I've eaten at Arzak and Kokotxa, both of which were exceptional.
As I'm fond of pointing out when people ask about Donosita:
foie gras is bar food there
.
Atari Gastroteka, Borda Berri, Bar Haizea, La Viña, Baztan. We stayed at Hotel Parma, which overlooked the estuary and Kursaal center, and didn't cost an arm and a leg. Next time we might venture out in the countryside, but honestly just booting around in the Parte Vieja would satisfy my gastronomic urges for pretty much ever.

Thanks...yea, it is a little overwhelming.

Hi Frank!
Here are some of my favorite San Sebastián recommendations:
-Bar Goiz Argi has life-changing shrimp pintxos. I still dream about them and that, coupled with the Basque tradition of pouring beer/cider from high in the air, most of it missing the glass, was one of the highlights of my time there.
-La Mejillonera for mussels
-We had a really good dinner at Ganbara which is a tapas bar and has a restaurant in the basement too.
-Also, I think
this
is the list I referenced when we were there from Gabe Ulla at Eater...still good even three years old!
