Dave Arnold's rants on smoke detectors are classic. He calls them "cooking detectors." So true.

EVERY time we take anything out of the oven at home it goes off. It's got to be the world's most sensitive smoke detector, so now we have stations every time we're about to open the oven. "You get the fan! I'll open all the windows and grab the pillow to fan it in case nothing else works!"

Before I owned a toaster, the 'cooking detector' was the call to all that breakfast was ready....

haha. I am on the opposite side of the spectrum. Once while searing some flank steak, the house got quite smokey. A lot of smoke. The smoke detector still didn't turn on. If I die, you know what happened.

here's a new product. Remote control turns it off for a specific time then it automatically turns itself back on.

ROFLMAO yes I admit I would totally buy one of those. In it's stead I use a whole-house fan.

Hahaha I'm not a hardware guy, but I'll keep it in mind.

I bet you could hack that amazon echo to do this

Nest used to advertise that their smoke detector would shut off when you waved at it. The product had serious issues and they finally removed that feature. Oh well....

I live in an apartment and there are not one, but TWO smoke detectors within 10 feet of my stove. I set them off constantly. My neighbors must hate me! It has gotten to the point that I now take my HEPA filter from my bedroom and sit directly under the closest smoke detector and crank it to turbo mode. THe searzall sets it off every time.
