Only Computer/Phone Operation?

I don't operate my oven, coffee maker,microwave, or any appliance with a smart phone or computer, nor do I want to. So why would I want to operate the Joule with ONLY a computer?

It sounds to me this feature removed the convenience of a self contained device.

For someone who just joined Chefsteps yesterday, April 18, 2016, I question your motives for all the negativity in your postings. Most of us who already use and have other sous vide machines see that the superior engineering and quality far outweighs your concerns. The idea behind Joule is to bring the advantages of sous vide to the masses in the easiest and most understandable method possible. With the app a novice or a professional can get using sous vide as soon as they open the box, no books or classes required. I personally see it as big advancement, enough that I have already purchased mine even though I already own another sous vide circulator.

Here's an idea: how about don't buy a joule and stop spamming the forum with your annoying Luddite critiques?

Over 2/3 of American adults have smartphones, and my guess is that those who don't wouldn't be using a sous vide to begin with, either because they're not big on technology or can't afford it to begin with.

I suspect the oven, coffee maker and microwave have controls. It is likely those controls are attached bit function in a similar manner...choose a temperature, or timr, or both and continue. If uncomfortable with not having a Joule with controls, I would respectfully suggest to purchase an inexpensive tablet (many available in the $50 range now) and use glue to secure it to your preferred location so it can't move like the controls and devices mentioned. Alternatively, use double-sided velcro and experiment to see if you like the convenience if being able to move the control (and the device). Maybe you won't. Everyone has their preferences. The membrane switches on my fridge and microwave have worn off, so in order for repair I will need to replace the entire unit, if they had an app, I wouldn't have to. So while this is new and different, I would respectfully submit to consider some of the advantages and limitations of the appliances mentioned (portability etc) as much as the Joule. Many of us, (me included) wondered about running it using the app. I was fortunate to test it....now I want more kitchen products (household actually) with similar advantages in their programability. Food for thought.

People used to think that they needed a separate phone, mp3 player, and internet communication device. Then the iPhone came along and now one device does all that and much, much more.

You do not need a separate display on every device that you own. It is wasteful, adds cost and is bad for the environment. If the display on your oven breaks you cannot use it. If the display on your coffee maker breaks you cannot use it. If the display on your microwave breaks you cannot use it. Since Joule has no display to break, it is now more reliable and will last longer. There is beauty in simplicity.

I think you should give it a chance. Exclusive phone control opens up an expanded feature set. It might take some getting use to but it is cutting edge. It is also in keeping with much of what you will find on this site.

Try something new or keep using something old- your choice.

I have yet to see a broken display on a kitchen appliance, but I have seen broken phones plenty.

Regarding simplicity, let's consider how one starts up a self-contained SV device: put it in the water bath, plug it in, turn it on, set temperature, hit start.

Now, how would one do the same with Joule: put it in the water bath, plug it in, (turn it on?), search for phone, is it in the living room or still on the bedstand, optionally shout "Honey, have you seen my phone?", unlock the phone with a few taps and swipes, start the Joule contol app with a few more taps and swipes, presumably wait for the chefsteps logo to fade in and out, maybe even wait for the two devices to establish connection, navigate to the set temperature screen, set temperature, hit start.

The thick film heating element is undoubtedly a "touch of genius", but smartphone controls are, unfortunately, clearly "bigger and more complex".

First, anything that can be dropped can be broken, both phones and kitchen appliances (and yes, I have seen broken kitchen appliances).

A button on the top of Joule turns the device on/off. Over time the button will acquire other features, like setting to your favorite temperature. An LED on the top tells you what mode it's on; heating, cooking or even if there's a problem.

Smartphone controls are not more complex, they simply give you more options. And options, when it comes to cooking food, are a good thing.
