Ahhh .... Keys to Success
cpiazza
Like software (vaporware) getting money in before you really know what you are doing is the mark of an amateur. Rule 1 in business ....... under promise and over deliver rather than we don't have a clue when we will ship.

What are you talking about? Is there a point to this?

Vaporware is off the mark. Vaporware doesn't exist. Joule does exist, many of us have had them in our hands and have cooked with them. They're great devices. ChefSteps ran into a certification issue that almost anyone with experience in the industry has run into and understands, and ran into some scaling problems in the manufacturing which they are taking steps to resolve. They also are adhering to your Rule 1 - They are refusing to commit to a date when the date is not completely within their control. So... As a community member who has seen the device, asked rude questions, and had a chance to work with it... What questions can I answer?

Unlike vaporware there is a money back guarantee, if you are not happy with your purchase. As an early adopter and someone who has been involved with bringing a new products to market this is not an unexpected setback. Transparency and keeping your early adopters informed is rule 1. I am in total agreement with

Mr. Piazza can you say Kickstarter? Everyday there are new incredible products being introduced (
all had failures a
nd setbacks a
long the way
). Just because something doesn't come easy doesn't mean it's not worth pursuing. Rule number 1 in business is NOT to under promise, it's to keep going on when failures pop up. Everyday Joule is being refined and tweaked to perfection.
Albert Einstein did not speak until he was 4-years-old and did not read until he was 7. He went on to become one of the greatest minds ever.
Thomas Edison's teachers said he was "too stupid to learn anything." As an inventor, Edison made 1,000
unsuccessful
attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps."
Henry Ford failed and went broke five times
before
he succeeded.
12 publishers rejected J.K. Rowling's book about a boy wizard before a small London house picked up
Harry Potter
.
Hank Aaron went 0 for 5 his first time at bat.
Failure and setbacks are a part of life's menu. Only those who dare to fail greatly can achieve greatly. ChefSteps is working hard to solve whatever issues comes their way. Joule will become the best Sous Vide circulator on the market not because it was or wasn't delivered on time, but because it was perfected before it was delivered.

Brutally honest - Chefsteps doesn't really need the $200 you possibly forked over.
Did they over-promise, don't think so, will they over deliver - yup.
If you are in the market I have 2 Polyscience Chef Professional you can come pick up,
they retail at $799, gimme a good offer?

I dunno about the rest of you, but I am willing to wait for the most incredible sous vide around. I think I will take the transparency and honesty of Chefsteps. Would you rather have a product that is great...or mediocre? There are many mediocre companies out there who don't care and just want to meet the deadline...I'm glad Chefsteps is not one of them. Patience is worth it - it's not about "me"and "I need it now" but rather Chefsteps caring about "us" and that is a mark of a good business. You go, Chefsteps!

I'm gonna do another post that is possibly more polite (You still have the offer to buy my PS rigs),
So we were invited out last week to hobnob and have fun with the other OG Forum people.
I've been in and around the Sous Vide world for a rather long time... One of my mentors ran
Grand Hotel in Stockholm (Sweden), they used this in the 70's. The Joule is a quite revolutionary
device in that it is if you compare stuff the big jump from the Nokia 6110 to an Android or an iPhone.
If you search other posts here, you'll see notes about heating, cooling, thermal inference, best way of monitoring
and so on.
I'm also a serial startup-er, and an ASF member (Yeah, we deliver slowly).
But I sat down just last week with people from Chefsteps and what we really talked the most about was how we'd
break down the forums and reach out to people that don't like to cook.
I've been on a few true vapor ware startups, this isn't one of those.
If you want to talk, I'll happily skype.

I was going to loan my Polyscience Pro out to people to continue spreading the sous vide gospel. But I have to admit, that I have undergone a subtle mental shift. I now think that I would be imposing a Polyscience Pro on someone. It's so LOUD. It's so DUMB. It's so... HUGE. How will I ever forgive myself?

Max, now that is funny. Let them use the Edsel while you drive the Tesla. Hey it's better than nothing, maybe! That Tesla is a real Joule.
HammeredChef_DEFINITELY_does_NOT_work_at_22134
Interesting thought process.....as said before Kickstarter, Indegogo etc is not amateurish.......waiting until a product is perfect ( even if you miss a deadline) is the correct and professional way to do it......oh wait, have you ever heard of Apple, most successful corporation in the world? I can't count how many deadlines they missed making the product as perfect as possible...
HammeredChef_DEFINITELY_does_NOT_work_at_22134
you are nicer than me....
AngelArs_240456
*sigh*
I want a Tesla
sooo
bad,,,,
AngelArs_240456
I love deadlines, especially the whooshing sound they make as they fly by...
Annette_Kam_303258
How many are on the waiting list for the Tesla? 400,000? How many are waiting for the Joule - I bet a bunch of us. I like that analogy a lot!

Another group of amateurs who know nothing about design and manufacturing. Just like the kickstarter crowd ..... get a prototype, hype it and take the money. The continue claiming problems holding up deliveries because they have no experience in product development, manufacturing or product launches.
