Hi all!

We’re excited to announce that ChefSteps community member Kris B. from the Boston area is the winner of our Dinner With Joule sweepstakes! Chefs Grant and Nick will invade Kris’s kitchen later this month for an evening of food, fun, and lots of sous vide, courtesy of Joule! We’ll share some pictures from the evening on our blog, so keep your eyes peeled.

I'm happy for Kris B. but I have to be honest, this does feel a little like a slap in the face to the rest of us who are waiting patiently for our Joules. An entry in a contest as a way of making up for a failed delivery date doesn't mean anything to those of us who 'lost'.

I'm not cancelling my order, I'll wait patiently for more info and hopefully a release date soon but I feel like this could have been handled better. Surely you knew a while back that you wouldn't meet the delivery date, if not, at least you could have been sending out more frequent updates on the development process. As it stands there was very little to soften the blow, we were all getting excited for our May delivery and out of the blue we are told we aren't getting them on time and you can't tell us when to actually expect them.

I hope Chefsteps makes this right. A small but meaningful gesture is all it would take, perhaps some exclusive bonus content or a nice recipe book; something to mark the fact that we jumped on board and supported the Joule early. A contest like this just makes me a little bitter.

I would like to know how this a slap in the face. They never have a firm release/ship date, because, when they opened up the pre-sales they were still in development stage. Clearly, they still are. You say a failed delivery date, but they never have one, just a "we hope to have then shipping by" date.

How could they have handled it better? How could they have longed into the future and seen a manufacturing issue? How could they have longed into the future and seen the FCC rejecting their application? You say you would like to have seen more frequent updates. What good would that do you? You'd still be here whining that you didn't win the dinner, and that you still don't have your Joule. How will they "make this right"? They already gave you 100 USD off the price. What else should they do to sooth you?

We completely hear you on this and truly wish there was something more (and meaningful!) we could do for each and every amazing customer who placed a preorder when we first announced and is now waiting patiently. Since we're focusing every ounce of effort the team has on getting Joule to you ASAP, we settled on the dinner contest or offering full refunds to anyone who wanted one, but like I said, I hear you and I wish we were able to offer something special to everyone. I do understand the delays and that's why I'm not cancelling my order. The contest thing just fell flat for me as 'compensation' for the delays. I'm glad you are working on it as hard as you can and I really hope to hear more progress soon.

The 100 dollar discount was advertised at the time as being for pre-order customers who would have to wait 6 months or so for the device. The website stated and my order confirmation stated that the Joule would start shipping in May and that is not going to happen. I understand that there are delays, these things happen but it still doesn't feel that great to have this cool thing I've been waiting so long for to be delayed indefinitely. I'm not cancelling my order but I am disappointed and the contest thing does nothing to alleviate that disappointment; if anything it's one more thing to be disappointed about.

I will quote to you from my order confirmation:

"Thanks for purchasing Joule! We can’t wait for you to get cooking. We’ll start shipping Joule in May 2016 and we’ll update you on our progress with occasional emails"

It does not say they HOPE to ship in May, it says they will start shipping in May. Additionally they said that they will update with occasional emails however the only other Joule related email I received from Chefsteps was the one informing us of the delay.

The reason the contest feels like a slap in the face is because it comes across as something they were offering to make up for the delay however it ultimately is only worth something to the one person who wins. The rest of us are left with nothing.

I'm still a fan of the Chefsteps and I cannot wait for my Joule to arrive. I do however think it is entirely justifiable to be disappointed by these delays.

I understand your disappointment. Emmett and Chris were in real danger as they tucked the Joule into their satchel and left my house. Sorry guys, but for a moment I thought of kidnapping you and keeping the Joule. In my defense, I would have fed you well.

Again, if you are seeing Strong Feelings being expressed, I believe it is because so many of us are so invested in both the team and the device. Rabid comes to mind.

Congratulations Kris B! You will absolutely enjoy the time with Grant and Nick. And selfishly (the only reason I'm jealous) is the time you could have with them to work with them and have them exchange stories. @Grant Lee Crilly and @Nick Gavin have some amazing talent and cooking minds (meaning they are just as creative as they are at actually cooking). This is a Joule of an opportunity for you. Enjoy and look forward to seeing the post-evening pics.

I completely agree. The contest was a generous offer.
But win or lose it doesn't matter because ultimately we came together for the Joule Product. Understandably there are always delays with new technology FCC and Manufacturing. But it would nice to get a weekly update on this progress.
The "$100 discount" was based on members who have pre-purchased since last year. I have 2 orders out and did not cancel yet because I believe it will be an excellent game changing product.

It would be nice to get some updates. We can defend Chefsteps, but has nothing to do with the videos and members that are apart of the community. This is all about the Joule and delays the consumers are expecting answers for. Thanks.

I'm a huge CS fan and a fellow pre-orderer (and I don't mind the delays at all, by the way), but I don't think this is really accurate. It's not a $100 discount for waiting, it's a $100 discount because preordering shifts the risk from the manufacturer/distributor to the customer. It's not a discount for waiting, it's a discount to reflect the risk that the consumer takes in preordering. Nobody would preorder anything that didn't have a very limited supply unless there was a discount. I sure as hell wouldn't have preordered the Joule without a significant discount.
