Stand Mixers

In the next few months my wife and I want to invest in a stand mixer. We've wanted one for a while and had planned on using wedding money to purchase one but my laptop burnt up and had to spend the money there. Everyone we know has a Kitchen-aid and loves it but I wanted to see if anyone else uses something different. @Chris and @Grant how do you guys like the viking mixer that you use in the kitchen?

@ParkerCook - I have the 5 Qt. tilt-head KA mixer and love it! If you intend on making a lot of bread, you may want the larger, more powerful version. I also think the various attachments make the KA mixer the best choice. In particular, I like the grinding and pasta roller attachments.

I have the KA tilt head, I was just saying to my wife that if we were in the market now I'd get the one with the adjustable bowl and more power, that said it is a great device. I have the pasta extruder and that thing just blows. Hard to clean, plastic, comes undone and I've seen quite a few reviews complaining about the same thing, for the pasta rolling I use an old hand cranked one that is completely in stainless.

I have the adjustable bowl, professional 600 (i think) and i like it a lot. I use the meat grinder a lot and I also have the sausage stuffer. If you can afford it get the largest capacity possible.

@ParkerCook — The Viking mixer is a rebranded Kenwood. IMO the motor is much stronger than a KA and it's well built.

I am about to purchase a 5qt Globe. Whatever you get, make sure its heavy and gear driven.

I have had the KA Professional 600 for 5+ years and never had an issue with it. The only attachments I use are the meat grinder and pasta roller.

The grinder is good for up to 10-15lbs of meat but don't use it to stuff sausages, it sucks for that. Buy a dedicated sausage stuffer it will reduce stress in the kitchen.

Have a KA pro 6 at home that I got for cheap as a demo model and have used others as well...all have needed planetary gear replacement once...

So, if I were to do it all over again, I'd likely consider other options, but all in all it has served me well. I'd echo @Tim in terms of useage.

A few thoughts:

- I've the Breville and have used it heavily for two years, and it's still going strong. Particular abuse includes stiff bread dough and dry ice frozen ice cream (including a time when the ice cream got so cold it froze totally solid and the mixer ground to a halt - no lasting damage that I could discern in the next 6 months of use)

- A family member has a 6 qt Kitchenaid bowl lift model. I find this model frustrating as it's not easy to add ingredients to the bowl, especially while the mixer is running. Adding dry ingredients is much easier with my Breville. No doubt Grant knows what he's talking about far more than I do, but looking at the Globe 5qt mixer, it looks like it'd suffer from the same problem. Think about having a wide bowl full of dry ingredients and trying to add it to the mixer; even with the mixer bowl lowered, the mixer head would prevent you from tilting the dry ingredient bowl more than 90 degrees.

- Word on the street is that the Viking is solid, powerful, and extremely loud.

I wouldn't say the Viking is extremely loud, no more so than most mixers. It is solid and powerful. It might also be worth knowing that the Viking is a re-branded Kenwood mixer.
