Just wondering where my Joule is and I foud this forum. Just who are Max and John and why are you so pro Joule? If you don't work for CS I just don't get it. All the time spent on a product you have no pecuniary interest in and that is not even in production "just for fun" does not make sense to me. Also wondering wy post from CS are conspicuously absent. Just one man's opinion.

I can't speak for the other guys, but I've been a registered member on ChefSteps for over three years, and lurked here for long before that. I was here before there was Joule, before there was Premium, before there was even any paid content. And from the beginning, the ChefSteps team has produced the highest quality cooking-related content I've ever seen. The site started out strong and it has only gotten better with time. As the ChefSteps website has grown, so has the team. And though I don't know any of them personally (or even all of them by name) I know that the core of the operation is composed of some of the most brilliant and talented people around. Whether they're Modernist Cuisine alums, applied mathematicians, coders, engineers, or development chefs, the team is solid and they have my full confidence. They're an excellent outfit with an excellent track record of providing excellent products (most of which are free). I'm probably sounding like a ChefSteps fanboy, but that's because I am. My enthusiasm is based on years of great experiences with the ChefSteps team and brand.

When Joule was announced, I didn't really care. I've had a circulator for some time, and there has been an explosion of inexpensive circulators over the past couple of years. I figured that if I was ever in the market for another sous vide device, I'd just get an Anova or something. But one day I happened across an article on Joule that outlined its hardware and design, and I decided to take a deeper look. And when I did, I was blown away. Simply put, Joule is set to become the best circulator on the market, period. I say this as an owner of a fancy Polyscience unit. Prior to Joule, all of the circulators ont he market have been designed in essentially the same way, with the same style of coiled heater and the same basic style of pump. Even though some have integrated wi-fi, all the new designs have been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. In my estimate, Joule is truly revolutionary. Everything about it is different, and everything about it is better. It's smaller, lighter, faster, quieter, smarter, and more powerful than pretty much everything else on the market. And it's beautiful.

I was a latecomer to the Joule preorder even though I've known about it since before it was even announced (some of the forum members were sleuthing patent and trademark registrations for ChefSteps and guessed that they were working on a circulator -- clever folks). But after I realized how well designed it was, I pre-ordered immediately. This was in May. I know that many people ordered way back in November or December, and I can only imagine how anxious they are to get their hands on the finished product. I know I am, and I only recently put my money down. But I'm content to give the team as long as it takes to deliver the product they believe in and that those who pre-ordered truly deserve. It will be worth the wait.

I've been a member here forever and been following the guys since the Modernist Cuisine days. I've seen them grow as a company, and I've seen them go through some growing pains. They've impressed me that they've always made good choices. An example would be them refunding money on classes when they didn't really have to, or rolling over Premium purchases into a discount on the Joule without being asked. They've always treated people well, and I'm local, so I get to stop by and see that....

The Joule itself is sweet engineering done right, and I'm excited about it. I do product development for my own business, and it's cool to see someone making the hard design decisions for the right reasons, and sticking with them. There are a lot of crappy consumer electronics products out there, and this is not one of them. That's pretty neat to watch.

Food is my passion and I have been doing sous vide for a while. I found people here with the same passion for cooking that I have. I have not been happy with other sous vide machines and find the one I have somewhat unreliable. So when I learned about Joule and how meticulous they are with their recipes I knew it would be a good product and I wanted to repay ChefSteps for some of the pleasure that I have gotten from being a part of their community, so I pre-ordered one. I was later afforded the opportunity to go to ChefSteps and be a part of their Joule event and ever since I have shared my excitement and experience.

I am sorry that you seem to find fault with my enthusiasm, I am not sure what you don't get about it. Have you never purchased something and thought that it was so good that you told other people about it?

If you will check my posts and responses within this forum I am a regular poster of the food I create, mostly with ChefSteps recipes and respond to other's posts as well, not just the Joule posts. I truly hope that you will be an active member of the community and learn and post about your food creations as well. Welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Probably for the same reason people sit at home and scream at the television during sporting events, go to the pub and get all sweaty over throwing darts, wear brand name leathers when they roll out their motorcycle of inferior technical specifications (That'd be a non Joule user) - Because it is fun, we belong, we want to see CS succeed and quite frankly as people have stated below; the technology is rather interesting. It can also be because we like and know these people from years of being on the forums, learning from them and feeling that we are even if just at the fringe attached in some ways a little bit part of helping out in their endeavor.

Johan's point is spot on; we have a personal rooting interest in the success of ChefSteps, there's nothing more to it than that. I joined ChefSteps in January 2013, and have been fortunate to visit the kitchen twice; I'm the dopey guy in the gray shirt in front of Max in the 'team photo' he posted. As a long-timer, I take great pride in sharing ChefSteps' content with my friends outside this community and getting new people involved. The evolution of the company and community has been entertaining to watch, and I'd be lying if I didn't say there's a pride in knowing that, to whatever limited extent, I've - we've - played a part in that growth.

It pleases me to see ChefSteps succeed because I believe in what they do and the way they do it.

(Btw--how do you know "the Joule is sweet engineering done right"? How can you say "there are a lot of crappy consume electronics products out there, and this is not one of them"? Far as I know, the Joule hasn't shipped to any consumers. Are you saying you've already received yours? Because it seems either a) you already received a Joule and are for some reason trolling the complaints of others who have been left out in the dark about the delivery date of their own, or b) are bragging about a machine you haven't actually used and tested.)

What lead you to write this post. These pro-Joule posts are getting oddly fishy. All these people going on about how well designed a piece of equipment is that they've never seen or used is. This undying trust that CS, which has never developed a single piece of equipment, is designing something perfect and beyond what hundreds of other electronics companies have designed. The trust that the delays are because CS is doing the right thing (as opposed to a first time designer not having experience and screwing up).

Just confused...I like CS too. I've been coming to the site for years. But I can't say a damn thing about how the Joule works compared to other products. All I have to go off on is CS's ads--the same ones that said they'd deliver in March, wait April, wait June, wait indefinitely delayed...

Not only have I seen Joule but I have used it. Please do not attack my integrity, I find that personally offensive. I have not questioned your character so why are you questioning mine? If you want to bash CS, that is between you and them, but please leave me out of it.

What lead me to write it was the borderline conspiracy theory implicit in the original post that there was something fishy about two long term forum members who have seen and used Joule expressing their enthusiasm about it. My own comments about how well designed Joule is are based on, well, Joule's design compared to the design of all the other circulators I'm familiar with. Just look at it.

The virtues of its design are obvious to me. Again, this is speaking strictly from a design standpoint. I can't say anything about its build quality, ease of use, or reliability because I haven't used it. I can say that I trust the team to deliver a quality product and to make things good for those who have issues (should issues arise). My comment was not meant to endorse Joule per se, but simply to illustrate why many on the forum are enthusiastic about the next new thing from ChefSteps. In my case, it's because I'm always enthusiastic about the next new thing from ChefSteps. That's all I was trying to say.

I'd also had a couple of Negronis, and I tend to ramble a bit when in that state of mind...

I guess I'll run down that point by point... My wife and I were lucky enough to be invited to a Joule event, with many other folks. We got a gift bag. CS offered to put us up, but we're local, so... No real point.

I'm not treated specially. I'm just an average customer. I pre-ordered 2 Joules, and I have a Premium account. I dropped by the office for a visit. That's it. If I'm special, all their customers are special, because as far as I can tell, anyone can mail @Ellen_212162 and get the same exact treatment I did. She's super awesome!

How do I know sweet engineering? Well, as I said, I develop products for my own business. I work with many of the same processes that CS does. I have experience in the industry going back about a decade in consumer electronics, software, and design. So, I'm a decent judge of quality.

I also *do* have hands on experience with the Joule. My wife and I were asked to do a user experience test. The CS UX crew came out to our house and watched us cook a steak per the directions on the Joule app and took notes on what we did and how we did it. We asked questions, and they were happy to answer them. My wife and I also asked questions at the event we attended.

Your tone has been hostile and accusatory this whole time. Given that you appear to be a new user, I'm sort of wondering where this is coming from...

You're right. It's kind of weird and fishy to have such strong advocates for Joule and ChefSteps out of nowhere. It's...kind of borderline evangelical.

So I think before Joule was announced, this forum had largely been used by sort of a small percentage of the community of ChefSteps that is really passionate about ChefSteps and their mission. While most of us have never really met up, the forum has always been a friendly place to post about food and share food ideas with like minded people. When Joule didn't make its original estimated deadline, the forum saw a lot of posts from new people who were upset and wondering where their joule was etc. I think the negativity has brought sort a different dynamic and the regular guys are just trying to keep the same community culture that we love. Not that we don't love you. Just trying to say where we are coming from.

In regards to the biased opinion thing, I think regardless of "special treatment" most of the regulars that will actually try to respond to posts like these would have supported Joule regardless of special treatment because we like ChefSteps and we're sold on Joule as well. I don't think...any of the members here have financial interest in making Joule successful. We're just believers! But if not, you can always just check out the engineering aspects yourself and make your own informed decisions!

Totally speaking for the other guys but I think it's more or less how I interpret it from the posts I've read.

Great post!!!!! CS is not some super-conglomerate mega-corperation. They are cooks and food lovers just like all of us here. While their resumes smoke ours, they are at-heart "foodies" just like the rest of us. The product they are bringing to market is one we will all benefit from and we know we can trust the people who brought it to us. I am as guilty as the next guy of wanting something "RIGHT NOW" but if you ordered a Joule it is for the same reason as the rest of us...we want a product we know will serve us well and made by people we want to help support. Most people who ordered the Joule know this and thats why we keep counting down the days until we get ours. But, it is more than that. We are part of the first generation of people who can directly give our money to people we believe in to provide a product we know will serve us well. This model allows people (not huge corporations) the ability to make something and bring it into the mass market.This is the first time in history this has happened. So there will be a learning curve for all involved. I count the days alongside you but I know it will be worth the wait.

I was really nurtured by this forum when I was learning sous vide, and really cooking as science. There wasn't a ton of information out there at the time, so this was really *the* place I came to get questions answered and experiment with others. I'm just trying to give back.

I can totally see where that seems overzealous to newcomers, but for me... I always feel like I am running in arrears on my karmic debt to the forum members and CS. So if I can help, I probably overdo it.

CS has been user testing the Joule.

You keep acting like we haven't seen or interacted with the device, when we have, and we're giving you our feedback. In addition to the user testing done, there was a full day event with the Joule that some lucky forum users were able to attend. There are photos of that event and a post about it. We're not making it up... Honest.

So we're giving you our impressions of the device. We're not saying it is perfect. I can say - again as a person with experience in such things professionally - that the Joule is well designed, engineered, and executed. I think when yours arrives, you'll agree.

This is a good and true point. I am not around the forum as much as I would like these days due to insane time commitments elsewhere, but I still love this place and feel personally connected to it. Everyone I know who cooks I push towards this site.

I am jealous as hell you've been fortunate enough to visit a couple of times, I wish I could! Once or twice I've gotten drunk and invited them drinking in England on twitter (they don't normally respond).

I'm a customer. I have a premium account (was updated since I bought so many classes). I purchased a Joule...

I haven't been invited to CS, They never offered to pay for my hotel room. I didn't get a gift bag. (In fact, it doesn't seem CS is going to offer anything above and beyond for missing their delivery date by 6 months). Apparently that treatment isn't given to all "average customers." Just the ones who provide glowing support for all things CS in the forums. So that is where I am coming from...
