BT/Wifi standard in 5y?

I do have a concern, and did not see this addressed in the FAQ.

Bleutooth/Wifi standards will evolve and our devices will evolve along the way. This means that in 5-7 years my iPhone may not be able to communicate with an old bluetooth version designed in Joule, or a new router will not work with the Wifi standards in Joule anymore.

Does that mean that I would have a Joule that would become unusable then ? or Do you have a clever way to solve this one ?

My wifi router (apple) is 10 years old, I have a set of bluetooth head phones the same age and my iPhone 6s and Apple watch still communicate just fine......backwards compatible last a long time...I wouldn't be to concerned...

I actually have a Samsung Galaxy S3 that I plan on keeping around to control wireless devices. It's already relegated to Sonos duty.

Here's the thing. Technology evolves at such a rapid pace that if they were able to get the latest and greatest wireless standards, they would be obsolete in roughly 5-7 yrs and Joule would have to be maybe $50 - $60 more because of this. Right now and for the next 3 or so years EVERYTHING you get will be compatible with the Joule. NOTHING is future proof, it's one of the things you need to accept in life or it will drive you up the walls

This is a great question and HammeredChef hit the nail pretty squarely on the head.

The 802.11 standard (WiFi standard) was established in 1999 (and now I feel old). This standard is designed to be backwards compatible, hence your first generation iPhone can still connect to even the newest wifi router and vice versa. Because of the ubiquity of WiFi devices that standard and their backwards compatibility, I believe, it will be around for a long time and as you upgrade routers and devices that it will continue to support that backwards compatibility.

As for Bluetooth Low Energy (or Bluetooth Smart). That standard was introduced in 2010 in a similar move to WiFi is supporting backwards compatibility. Bluetooth low energy has become almost required on mobile devices (they estimate that 90% of bluetooth enabled mobile devices are going to support bluetooth low energy by 2018). It also has become one of the top communications protocol for the internet of things (IoT) movement.

We have also worked really hard to ensure that we can perform device updates to the underlying communication stacks so that we can perform updates on them when necessary.

Finally, as one of the developers at ChefSteps who has basically immersed myself in the communication stacks, I've been reading a lot about what is on the horizon and I'm not seeing anything in the near future that would make me think that Joule's won't continue to work perfectly 5 years out.

TL;DR - I personally think that both standards have been around for almost 2 decades now and have maintained backwards compatibility and I don't see anything on the timeline that would change that.

I agree with HammererChef with technology progressing, they will basically include backwards compatibility.

The new AC WiFi standard also allows for the previous 802.11 b, g, n. USB 3.0 also covers 2.0. Same with Bluetooth. If they didn't, various technology devices would just become throw-aways, and you would be needing to buy new devices every 12 months.

@Dan_Ahern_30344, @HammeredChef_DEFINITELY_does_NOT_work_at_22134, and @Stephen_254879 have the right of it. These standards are designed with backwards compatibility in mind. In the event that the new hotness comes out in wireless communication standards, your old standards will still work fine, you might just be missing that oh-so-nifty new feature that they just came out with.

To put the problem in perspective, if your Joule stops working because of a standards change, everything else will too, and your Joule not working is the least of your worries.

I am happy to hear that the reverse compatibility is more ingrained and reliable than I thought. Also it is very good to know that device updates are possible. This is very reassuring. Simply put, it's more of a features "thing" than a compatibility "thing". In 5 yrs time your Joule will still connect as it does today, but you may not be able to use any of the shiny new features that are incorporated in devices in 5 years.
