Smartthings and apple HomeKit are 2 platforms for home automation. A device that works within the platforms would be able to setup routines. Such as a geofence when I leave work my house knows and my joule would start so that by the time I got home my meal was halfway done.

It works with Alexa, but I am unsure how to automate alexa
