Shopping for Cast Iron Dutch oven
Matt_Porter_420457
Hello all,
I am shopping around for a cast iron dutch oven, looking for something reasonably priced but that will also last me a while. I'm well aware of seasoning and maintenance so that is not an issue. Any suggestions?

Lodge
?

Was definitely considering them as they seem to be the most common brand used for outdoors. I also just finished reading this article
http://dutchovenexpert.com/camping-cast-iron-dutch-ovens
and it seems like the author suggests Lodge as well. Anyone else before I pull the trigger?

I have Le Creuset and love it, don't everybody get their panties in a bunch BUT, IKEA has some for 39 freaking dollars, has anybody touched one yet?

I've seen them but have never tried them or heard of anyone who has

I have one from Costco, it was around 60 bucks I think-no complaints

it is 3.2 quarts and weighs 9lbs 3 oz. they have a couple different ones in SENIOR Line.

3.2 quarts is basically nothing. But that's a great price.
EDIT: Okay, it's not basically nothing. But it's still pretty small. 4 QT is as small as I'd go with a dutch oven.

Another Lodge user here. I have a 4qt Lodge that I use for deep frying, bread baking, and small-batch slow-cookery tasks. And I have an enameled 8qt Tramontina (which, at the time, was Cook's Illustrated's best buy) that I use for big batches and acidic foods.

Agreed but, for 49 they have a 5 1/2 qt

Decided to pull the trigger on the Lodge Cast Iron, seemed like the best bang for it's buck! Thank you for all the feedback!

Although Lodge is the most popular and common brand, they are all factory "pre-seasoned" to prevent rusting which leaves a somewhat bumpy texture on them that some find undesirable. Real cast iron afficionados look for vintage cast iron that they can recondition using a variety of tools and high heat.

I have had a Lodge cast iron oven, like forever.
It did need to be reasoned, about 8 years ago, that's it.
Cheap and indestructible .
For stuff you want to keep away from iron bite the bullet and buy a Ceruset, it's a one time deal, and mine has lasted 15 years.
