App responsiveness

I'm so excited about my joule. I can't believe they should be shipping soon!

To tide myself over, I installed the app. I like its layout quite a bit, but it feels extremely sluggish. There is ~1 second between pressing buttons and the requested page opening. My phone is a Nexus 6, so not latest tech, but still pretty decent.

As for content, only clicked around a bit, but the egg guide doesn't seem well fleshed out. It only has 2 suggestions, both of which are the same temperature. That seems in contrast to the chefsteps sous vide egg calculator (https://www.chefsteps.com/activities/the-egg-calculator ). Its at least substantially less developed.

Anyone else notice these issues? My first impressions are not overwhelmingly positive.

John, who is one of the beta testers, has posted that an extensive egg guide already exists & will probably be published quite soon as the CS team finish minor tweaks. You've also got to remember that the app as it exists is a foundational document. Much, much more content will be added or available to purchase over time.

Haven't seen responsiveness issues on an iPhone 5, especially once videos run the first time & are cached.

Overall, I'm astounded it works so well having used other terrible apps in the past (sorry Anova), and having a dim sense of just how hard to pull off this would be.

My phone is a ss5 and initially I found the app can was a bit slow periodically, but I often have so many things running simultaneously I wasn't surprised. To find the unit usually takes 2-5 seconds (which if you;re like me it's a lifetime :-)..). That said, the majority of the features and interface is quite responsive and more so since the last update. I will be interested in seeing how it responds once I eventually replace my phone. Defiinitely not unhappy at all at this point. The time it takes me to open an app selt a temp or whatever is still far less than holding down those darn membrane buttons on my PS. :-)

I'm still cautiously optimistic, but it seems like there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Hah, yeah, I was worried it would be way worse. It looks pretty decent right now, but there is quite a bit of room for improvement. As is, I'd say it's maybe a 3 out of 5. Hopefully the back-end is well made so they can expand and improve it in the future.

Nexus 6p here, no issues for me. The videos (which are a big part of visual doneness and the recipe steps) are bigger than you think and can be slow on mobile. On wifi it's a much more seamless experience

It is just as slow for me on wifi. I have a decent, but not great, internet connection (~2MBps down and I frequently play games with ~50ms ping times). Still pretty sluggish. It doesn't feel like processor lag, but I guess I couldn't say for certain.

My gut feeling is that videos are not doing any sort of buffering. It feels like it downloads the entire page you want to click on before it starts displaying any of it. Maybe a bit like internet browsers ~10-15 years ago. Pre-downloading large swathes of content seems like an obvious feature. It would drastically expand the applications disk footprint, but I don't see this app being successful without some more options and development along these lines.

Ouch, 2 MBps? I think you're probably right about the buffering. @Emmett_Barton_12803 Can you chime in here?

To be clear, that is 2MBps (~16Mbps). Definitely not great, but I find the number of websites that actually let you download faster than that to be pretty minimal. It is fast enough to stream 1080p content seamlessly (using standard compression).

I don't believe that we are doing any fancy buffering of videos. The videos are using straight HTML5 video, which is the best solution for now. The good news is that once the video is loaded, it remains cached.

I'm using a 4 year old iPad and the app works flawlessly. Will check how it runs on android later tonight.
