How Loud is Joule?

To those who have Joule or who have tried it, have you ever stayed in the same room with Joule for a long time and noticed it being very loud? What do you hear when you turn Joule on and it stays on for a long time?

I only ask because I'm a student living in a studio and my kitchen is 10-15 feet from my bed and study area, so I wanted to make sure that Joule won't interfere with my day-to-day life with studying and sleeping ... Of course, I would imagine that submerging the entire water outlet would subside the "waterfall" sound of Joule and it is designed to be one of the quieter devices in the market, but what are your firsthand experiences with it?

Joule is very quiet. I would compare it to roughly a small aquarium. It's not silent but very quiet, the circulation motor is all you hear as long as the outlet is submerged. If you do hear anything else, squeak or anything like that it's telling you it's time to clean Joule. A mixture of 50/50 vinegar and water in a small container set for 140°F and when your up to temperature Joule is clean. I had it happen to me when I was testing a beta Joule, but I used it everyday for two months before I heard anything.

Thanks John! Is the sound noticeable enough to interfere with the quietest of activities while in the same room? Can I not leave it on while sleeping?

The only noticeble sound is te water circulating. In a cambro it is hardly noticeable. After having the PS and Anova for a few years, I find myself checking the cambro to see if it is still running. :-)

My jewel of a Joule is whisper quiet. The only time I actually hear anything is if there is so little water that the outflow isn't covered up so that you hear the water flowing. Then it sounds like a fountain. A babbling brook. Peaceful and serene.

I don't think it will interfere at all. It shouldn't be a problem while sleeping, IMHO. But then again I can sleep in front of the TV, lol.

I'll use a decibel meter to measure tomorrow. I was actually surprised at how loud Joule is. Has a higher pitch than my Anova one. Mine is certainly not quiet.

This is Kevin from ChefSteps engineering. Joule should not be very loud when operating. One thing that can happen is if Joule is placed on the bottom of the vessel, and that vessel is on a rigid surface, the entire arrangement can act like an amplifier. Putting a soft trivet underneath will solve this problem.

When you conduct your measurements tomorrow, could you do a couple of things and share your data to help us determine if you have a problem or not.

1) Let us know what brand/model of dB meter that you are using.
2) Please use the dB weighted rating scale A for a cumulative reading, which is recommended for low noise levels.
3) What is the ambient noise level in the room without Joule Operating?
4) Measure at a distance of 1 meter. And try front, ie. the side with the outlet, back and both sides.
5) Describe the configuration that you are testing. What type of pot or vessel, are you using the magnet or clip, what surface are you resting upon, and the water level.

Now that is interesting... Someone from CS does read the forum, they just choose to respond to almost none of them. You have very specific scientific procedure for measuring sound from Joule which I appreciate, but will there be equally well thought out responses to any of the other requests on this forum? Is there a similar policy for email responses because I have 5 unanswered emails. All of the requests for updates I've seen have been met with deafening silence... or maybe I'm using the wrong dB meter. Even a "no, we're not releasing that information" response would be better than the current disrespect for your customer base.

I read a review on decibel meters and have decided to download a new one. Is there one you particularly recomnend?

I personally haven't had much luck with the various meters that you can download to an iPhone or Android. The most difficult part of sound measurement isn't the meter, it's really the testing environment. You really want a room environment that is ~ 30dBA or less and a good baseline measurement of the background sound so that you can subtract it out.

I've had my Joule for 3 days now and it is whisper quiet. If you're standing right next to it you can hear it but not from across the room.
