As of now, we own neither a blender nor a stand mixer, so before spending a fair bit of money (and space!) on those things individually, I thought I'd investigate thermal mixers. I prefer to buy things once, or not at all.
To my surprise, I didn't find any threads on thermal mixers here on Chefsteps.
After a bit of research I've landed on the
Hotmix Pro Gastro as the more attractive of the bunch (larger temperature range and precision than the competition) however, I am somewhat wary due to a couple of factors:
- There's next to no information about it anywhere on the internet. It's meant more for a professional kitchen setting, which goes some way in explaining the relative lack of buzz, but still.
- From the limited information available, it seems a surprising (relative) amount of people have had mechanical trouble with it — but not a peep in the last two years.
- The Gastro is programmable, but the software is PC only and looks very dodgy; if this lack of effort is emblematic of the rest of the product, it doesn't bode well.
- It's a big investment in a single item.
For those of you who use thermal mixers, I have a few questions:
- Are they worthwhile replacements for good blenders?
- Ditto for stand mixers?
