Lid Mod for Joule

Fellow Joule owners, try this if you're interested in minimizing evaporation from your water bath. This should work with any polyethylene lid and utilizes tools that you most likely already have on hand. Gather the following: blowtorch, crappy dinner knife, 48mm round cutter. Warm the edge of the cutter w/ torch and carefully melt the lid in your desired location. Do the same thing with the knife for straight cuts. Easy as pie.

That's really smart. The cut looks really smooth done that way. Where did you get the 48mm round cutter?

P.S. Maybe consider doing an Instructable for this as a reference people can easily find in the future. I'm sure future Joule users would appreciate it.

Nice job cutting out the hole in the lid. I was a bit less precise. The soft plastic lids were easy to cut out, used a sharp knife. The hard clear plastic lid was a real challenge, used a small hacksaw blade, sandpaper and a few beers. I didn't measure, just eyeballed it, which is why yours looks awesome and mine looks... just ok. Thanks for sharing.

I made a cut-out in much the same waya while back. It's done in such a way that the lid encloses the bracket. I still need to pad the tub with foam insulation, but evaporation is covered

I haven't had time yet to do the lid modification. But I needed something to cover the lexan yesterday when I was sv'ing lamb. First, I put Joule in the corner of the lexan rather than in the middle of a wall (if that makes sense). Once I put the lamb packages in the water, I used some handy dandy Stretch Tite plastic wrap and make a make-shift cover. Securing the Joule into the corner allowed for the wrap to cover about 95% of the container. Worked like a charm! So if you haven't had time (or don't own any covers for your lexans), give it a try.
