Hey everybody

I'm looking for a birthday present for my bf. He loves cooking and this website/App with all the recipes. He already has everything he needs for sous vide cooking

But is there anything you guys would totally freak out about? Some nice kitchen tools, fancy books ..... ?

The tools and books would probably be dependant on what he likes to cook. Modernist Cuisine at Home, The Food Lab, The Favor Bible, The Science of Good Cooking, Molecular Gastronomy, and Tartine Bread are all very interesting books. If he doesn't have any really good pans, Darto pans are great. You could get him an induction cooker, a knife sharpening set. You could also do something as simple as cook for him. You could also do something that has nothing to do with food at all, dependant on his other interests or hobbies.

I'd be pretty elated to get MCAH along with something from the book for one of the recipes (you know.. if you really love him, hah) - my vote would be a pressure cooker - I find I use it way more than I ever thought i would. I got an ISI siphon thinking I would use it all the time, the exact opposite.. I rarely use it.

I don't now about fancy but if he likes to bake breads, Peter Reinhart's Artisan Breads Every Day is a great teaching/recipe tome. I also like his The Bread Bakers Apprentice. FULL of recipes! If you prefer to go in another direction, I love Michel Roux Jr's The French Kitchen. Excellent classic French dishes that are very do-able in a home kitchen.

There are many good books out on Sous Vide cooking. You could also get him a chamber vacuum sealer or regular vacuum sealer from Weston or FoodSaver so he could cook larger portions and then save them for eating later.

Seriously, there is nothing like a great cook book, and ALL the ones the members have listed here are fantastic. The thing about a cookbook is you tend to keep them for ever. Write something inside the cover and sign and date it...I still have cook books from all three of my wives...

Hire the chef at a restaurant you both like to give you a private cooking lesson on the restaurants day off where you drink wine, learn about the restaurant, and discover the secret behind your favorite dish.

** I'm not sure how the price might work out but perhaps invite another couple to make the time more valuable to the chef and more affordable to you.
