Go to the Article: Awesome Espresso Hack: Make Great Coffee With a Moka Pot
Okay - I try to find my Moka pot and give it a try. I always liked the way how the pot works and it should be a nice alternation to my french press coffee.
I actually keep my moka pot in a case with my camp stove. I use it quite often while at work. I will go sit out on the patio with some friends and have a nice cup of coffee while taking our afternoon break. I had been looking for a new one but took a break from it for a while. I guess I need to start up again.
nice... I must try it! I hated my moka pot. Always made horrible coffee
I confirm, everything correct, I'm Italian, neapolitan actually..and you know what coffee means for neapolitans!!?? Bialetti, the better for moka pot. But I disagree with the hot water, not necessary at all. Cold water gives the time to give flavour to you coffee. bye
I thought it was pronounced mock-a? Not mo-ka.
I just bought a little 3-cup Bialetti Moka pot on Amazon for about $25, on the strength of this recipe. I washed it out with plain water as per the pot's instructions, and made a "throwaway" potful using some ancient Folgers drip grind stored in the bottom of the fridge. I have NO idea how old that coffee is, but I figured, if I'm throwing out the result, does it matter?
I followed the instructions in the video for the actual brewing. The last Moka pot I owned, the instructions were even worse than the ones that came with this one -- it was a cheaper pot from the drugstore I got for $5 -- and I thought you were supposed to tamp the grounds like with a portafilter. I saw the logic immediately in NOT tamping them, and used near-boiling water from my kettle instead of cold water. I didn't know you could leave the lid up and WATCH the coffee bubble up, which was fascinating, and when it "gurgled", I took it to the sink and gently sprayed lukewarm, then cold water on the tank to stop the steam. I started to pour out the coffee, but it smelled SO good, I figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a taste.
It's only a 3 oz pot, so I poured it all into a cup, sipped. Absolutely smooth, no bitterness AT ALL. I added sweetener (I use erythritol) and half and half, making an Americano instead of a latte, and tried another sip.
It is the absolute best cup of coffee I've ever had. It's better than what I get from my aeropress. Imagine how good it'll be with fresh-ground beans instead of God-knows-how-old Folgers? I am SO glad I watched this video, and got a Moka pot again to try it! The aeropress may go back into the cupboard after this!
I agree!!!! I've used my moka pot for the last 8 years every day, ever since I visited Italy! I can't drink coffee any other way
What size (in cups) Moka pot is being used in this video? Thanks!
Here's what we used! Thanks, Pavina!
Phew (I bought the correct one then)! Thanks, Ellen! Keep on rockin', Chef Steps.
Just received my 6 cup Bialetti for Christmas! I am very interested in buying a portable induction burner, as I see one was used in the video. Any recommendations? Thanks!
What size moka pot should I get? I heard the 3 cup one makes the best coffee but that seems inconvenient to me if I want to make lattes for a large group of people. Is there anything wrong with the 6, 9, or 12 cup models?
And what size are those milk pitchers? 12 oz or 20 oz?
After seeing this I purchased a 3 cup Moka pot.. the coffee is the best EVER! Thanks for this!
Dear Francesca, I agree: cold water! One secret I learnt by a neapolitan friend? Add a mini-pinch (really mini) of salt to the ground coffee. It's so small you don't feel the salty taste, but it's enough to modify your sense of bitterness and give an extra taste to reach perfection. And never use soap to carefully clean the moka but just water.
I found a great moka pot hack! next time your prepare your pot, place an areopress filter on the bottom of the top chamber (over the filter) and wet. Prepare moka pot as usual. Produces a GREAT cup of coffee. Deep flavors from extraction and a clean taste from the added filter.
The smaller pots have marginally better extraction because they can produce higher pressures (smaller chamber = more pressure). Unless that's a major concern for you guests then there's nothing wrong with a big pot, especially if you're sharing!
Keep the aeropress filters and use them on the moka pot! It's a cool hack that I mention above. Happy brewing!
Thanks for the tips!
Morning is better now.. it is better than starbucks, mystarbucksvisitcom.com
You did not mention the temperature on the stove: maxium? medium? minimum? Thanks.
