I like the link to the Breville microwave. Gotta keep the boss happy! :-)
Dave Arnold played around with searing on a silicon carbide stone a few years ago. Silicon carbide absorbs microwaves and can be heated to >800°C (yes °C, not °F) in a microwave (jump to 23:40):

Popular Science described using this method to melt metals in 2003, which seems to have been widely imitated on the Internet:

Great stuff!
Btw the teaser mentioned PERFECT scrambled eggs, BUT it was only mentioned in the intro?
Link to the steak recipe doesn't work?
Hi Adam,
The steak was pretty simple...all we actually did was heat the slate up until it was hot and seared the steak on it 20 seconds at a time until the internal temp was 125 °F. The steak itself was only microwaved for 40 seconds total.
Have you already played with a solid state cooking oven (aka microwave 2.0)? The science behind this: https://www.ampleon.com/documents/white-paper/Ampleon-RF-Solid-State-Cooking-Whitepaper.pdf
And you'll also find some videos on Youtube by Miele - dialog oven.
@Grant Lee Crilly could we get the recipe for the PERFECT scrambled eggs?
Hi Kyl and Grant. Studio Pass subscriber here. Like others have asked, I liked the teaser for "perfect scrambled eggs" in a microwave, yet I can't find a link above or in the Studio Pass area. Can you post it, please? Thank you!
(Edit: just watched the 6 1/2 min Frenzy video and saw several egg dishes teased in a quick montage towards the beginning. Would love to get some info on all those, rather than trying things by trial and error as you guys did.)
So - any plate made of slate? Just buy one at a Sur La Table or Williams Sonoma? Want to be sure it's not something that will shatter. And heating it for 1 min or 5 prior to adding the steak? You're knowledgeable with this, but the specifics would be great for those who don't want to screw it up. ;-) Thanks!
Hi Scott, I should be adding those activities in the next few weeks coming up. Keep a look out.
New studio pass subber here and the steak was the primary thing I wanted to see! With all the meticulous thought you put into your recipes, I would love to see a proper writeup for the exact steps you took, starting with selection and heating of the microwave absorbing plate.
See instructions above, @Caleb Mish.^^
Hi @Scott Dobbie,
We used a regular slate board that we had on hand for serving cheese. It survived the microwaving session, but cracked later when it was washed. We will be using the new Breville Combi Wave™ 3 in 1 microwave which combines an Air Fryer, Convection Oven & Microwave, plus a crisper tray that we’ll be able to test out on steak soon.
I got the Studio Pass for the microwave recipes teased in the Microwave Frenzy Video. So far disappointed. Although I did experiment with scrambled eggs. Got an inverter microwave. Used power level of 3. As the egg cooked on the outside I stopped and scraped the edges until I got desired texture. I like my scrambled eggs runny...Came out good....
Ok, got all caught up on the Holiday season. We are going to make and shoot the activities for a few break out recipes from this one this week.. they will be posted in January, sorry for the wait. its been crazy!
