When does the offer expire?
Not available for Canadians?? I sooo want to order one.
For the home cook? You’re kidding right? Beautiful and I’m sure wonderful but at $1500 before discount that’s one expensive single burner.
Why not available for Canada ???
I wan one! Hope the offer can be expanded to include EU...
$1500? I guess I'll have to wait for the KitchenAid version.
me too
Yowza kazowza that’s like 4 car payments. I was going to look at site, but I cannot afford 1500.00 for a cooktop. I would love one, I want to win one like Kristian L did. How do I do that. Or if anyone wants to send me one, feel free to pM me
With exchange it will be over $2100.00 CND at least with Paypal exchange rate. You can select Canada (click next to American flag icon in upper right).
Even with a discount, this is insanely expensive
What is the biggest size pot or pan that will function well on the Control Freak?
Grant,
Would you be able to comment on the warranty, will Breville/Poly honor this if for home use? If not it would be a expensive door stop.

Cheers!

Looks like a real step up from an old-fashioned electric frying pan. At this price I will stick with my 25000 BTU gas burners on my stovetop and my ThermoWorks probes -- for now. Now that the warranty has been clarified, I am sorely tempted!
I agree Chad. It doesn't seem right that if they're selling it to home cooks, they aren't warrantying it for home cooks!
Good catch. If there is no warranty, it's out of consideration.
Duxtop 1800W Portable Induction Cooktop Countertop Burner, Black
Will do 95% of what the Control Freak can do for 5% of the cost. Breville needs to get a clue about how to price and warranty these items for regular consumers, Grant.
https://www.tastyonetop.com has a temperature probe closed loop temperature control. It also has an app. It's also $99.00. The PolyScience control freak is just a poor value for just about anyone.
Daaannnggg! I can get a whole range for that price! I have a Insignia induction cook plate I paid under $100 for that works well.
Thanks for sharing, Clay. Very close to the Control Freak and SO much more reasonably priced.
This site was sooo much better before you got bought out by Breville. You used to be all about good cooking and everything you posted I could trust. Now all you do is push Breville products and I can't seriously consider anything you post anymore to be free of conflict of interest. At least Cooks Illustrated, who is also always trying to sell you something, has an illusion of using and recommending more than one brand. I hope you sleep well at night with all the money you get from Breville. I doubt I will renew my studio pass membership when my fist year is up.
Seriously??? $1500 for one burner? I don't think so.
In contrast, I think ChefSteps is better than ever! And point to a product they are pushing that doesn't get great reviews by independent parties (which we are all free to read before buying anything). Breville makes great products and is a perfect match for ChefSteps IMHO.
A company promoting their products is not a conflict of interest.
YMMV, but Wired gave the Tasty only a 6/10 rating, in large part because it didn't heat evenly.
https://www.wired.com/review/tasty-one-top-smart-induction-cooktop/
Whereas the Control Freak does according to Eater's review (Dave Arnold).
https://www.eater.com/video/2017/8/8/16113186/breville-control-freak-induction-burner-review
That appears to be the commercial warranty on the PolyScience site. It doesn't say that in the warranty on the Breville site (which is the more typical 1 year, not 2). But a good question to ask before buying.
I recently purchased a fairly expensive Breville appliance (the $1000 Pizzaiolo oven, although I managed to get it for <$650 on sale and with a new credit card discount) and I carefully researched it before buying. There were some issues with cracked stones in the original model (since updated to fix the problem). But I have to say from what I read about other people's experiences with Breville customer service, they sound very good, quickly replacing the stones or even the entire ovens.
Yes, this would be great to know.
Go check out Cook's Illustrated's review of induction burners and tell me what they liked.
Hi, the household use Non Warranty kills the deal. It's expensive, sure, but I'd like to buy it, really, I have other expensive stuff in use in the kitchen and would love to play with this. However, f it's not intended, or more importantly, not warranted for household use, I'm not the market being targeted.
Richard
Just from seeing what the price the Breville Site has for Joule, I look at other sites for comparison. It is listed on those other sites for $1,499 also but if you sign up for a news letter you can get 15% off and free shipping
On the Breville site after taxes and discount it’s like $1,396 so it’s still up there. During these uncertain times it’s hard to just drop $1,400 on an appliance. I can see it worth having if something happens with gas companies you can still cook...but if something happens with electric then that’s a whole different issue.
As someone who has been using the Control Freak at home for approx 18 months I think this deal is fantastic. It really is an unbelievably useful tool. It runs the full gamut from low and slow, precise water bath, oil poaching, deep and shallow frying, braising, searing and sugar work and much more with excellent speed power consistency durability and heat recovery. The unit is so dynamic and responsive it feels like a great gas burner but with way more control. A pair of them would be absolutely perfect. As compared to any other induction burner out there closed loop or otherwise this is in a different league. This is a Steinway compared to the Casio keyboard of the Tasty et al. Thanks for the great chart - I’m always looking for precise referenced temperatures to achieve better consistency with my cooking and skip over some of the trial and error (never have enough time to cook and always want to 10x it which is exactly what chef steps is great for!) - please make a Celsius version and any more info you can give on holding temperatures and custard/egg/sabayon work would be amazing!
Was about to order, and seen the no warranty for home use part. What a joke. Will stick to my Hestan Cue for now.
it's also not very compelling content
How can you in good conscience market something to your subscribers that has no warranty?
HELLO ALL, GRANT HERE. I hear all your questions and concerns, please trust me when I say we will make you made happy. We would never offer you a product that we do not stand by AND believe in. As you may or may not know, commercial products like the Control Freak are approved for commercial sanitation and electric safety under ETL AND UL guidelines. These guidelines are slightly different than the home guidelines and usually much stricter. The Control Freak is built to a much higher durability standard but I completely understand your concerns here. I am working with PolyScience and Breville to get you a precise answer on the matter asap, but rest assured that no one in Studio Pass will be left anything less than fully satisfied.
Hi, Michael – please see my response above.
Thank, you BostonBestEats. I'm getting eaten alive over here! I swear I am trying to make the best cooking site for you guys - with rad deals you can't get elsewhere on epic products we love - THAT'S IT!
I'd love to make the content that you crave most. And we will be launching a survey soon to try to get more organized feedback from the community on what you would like to see more of — we're a very small team trying to get a lot done;)
CONROL FREAK WARRANTY THE CONTROL FREAK IS UNDER WARRANTY—Even though it's commercial grade, the Control Freak's warranty covers home use. (If you already bought one from us you received the Commercial Warranty, Breville-PolyScience will be sending you the consumer warranty soon. If you were considering buying one, rest assured there is consumer warranty coverage. SEE ABOVE
Bruce, sorry for the confusion—it has a warranty.
Richard, my apologies for the confusion—the control freak does carry a consumer warranty.
Please see above—it is covered under a warranty.
I'm not sure what other sites you are referring to, but just be aware that the 15% discount William-Sonoma usually offers for signing up for their email does not apply to any Breville products. You can get a 20% discount from them for Breville products, SOMETIMES, if you apply for their credit card (1-time only and have to purchase the same day you apply), but I would talk to them directly while ordering to be sure since there is some debate about that and an individual store can make a decision about it. Calling customer service or the cc company won't help. Based on my experience purchasing a Breville Pizzaiolo recently, I was able to finagle the 20% cc discount through the local store, but it took some work.
CI only recommended 2 induction burners, the Control Freak and Max Burton, the former of which was superior, giving even heating across its larger coil and heating faster than an induction stove. The other models, including the Tasty, failed miserably.
Wendy, I believe the CF has the largest coil on the market, 9 inches, so it can evenly heat full sized pots and pans (unlike most of its brethren according to the Cook's Illustrated review).
Grant, although we have never spoken before, I wish to personally send thanks to you and the team for arranging this offer, for clearing up the confusion and for all the new content that Chefsteps have been publishing. I have found the new stuff both interesting and useful. Please keep it up. Thanks again!
Thank you for the clarification Grant. It's just interesting that on the Poly Sci web it's written in ALL CAPS. I don't understand this as most commercial units are warranted for essentially any use as long as they are installed, maintained, and used per manufacturer guidelines.
That all said, there's a lot of good stuff here (Chef Steps).
Hi ChefSteps and Grant, I'm thrilled that you worked with Breville to make this offer available and thanks for clearing up the confusion on the warranty. Yes, it's an investment piece of kitchen equipment but I expect it to make working in the kitchen a pleasure rather than the chore it can often turn into when working with less reliable tools. While I was surprised by and initially leery of Chefsteps' acquisition and what it would mean for ChefSteps' content, I've enjoyed ChefSteps since the beginning and happily find that I still do. Your videos and recipes have been a wonderful way to pass the time while in seclusion and the positivity you and your team exude have brightened many of my days. Keep up the amazing work; I look forward to continuing my subscription for many years.
Just placed my order total $ 1,274.96 thanks for that discount. And for clearing up warranty. What pot and pans are recommended to start with? Preferibly under $200 each but I will go to $300 a piece. Thanks for all you do.
My point exactly Ordered mine yesterday.
Ah I saw on the sur la table. What was interesting I had the control freak in my cart but held for a second and got an e-mail from Breville that they saw I hadn’t purchased and would take 15% off my cart. Unfortunately it wouldn’t let me stack the coupons which is a little messed up because the one coupon is for being a studio pass member and that coupon takes it right of the item and the other coupon was for the cart. There was no copy anywhere reading can’t be combined with other offers. And I am very grateful to Grant and everyone at ChefSteps thinking of us and giving us access to cool things!!
What does "For a Limited Time" mean? When will the offer on the Control Freak end? Still waiting for a stimulus check...
I checked with Breville customer support, and they confirmed that "The control freak's purpose is for commercial use and if you want to purchase it from your home it would not have a warranty"
Hmmm, I hope it's only a left hand - right hand problem.
From the Poly Sci website:

Thank you Grant. Now have a Negroni.
Keep it up! I always look forward to new material from you. My 10-year old son loves the video where you make pot roast in a pressure cooker.
I would absolutely love to buy this, since I've been wanting one ever since I first heard about it 4-5 years ago, but it's still a wee bit out of my price range. Maybe when I get my next big raise...
I got a control freak and it's heating only kind of a thin ring under my pots. Is this normal?
Apparently you have until 4PM PDT today (April 24th).
Thank you for the deal! went ahead and bought one. Now you guys need to do a class similar to the countertop oven for the Control Freak, I have a few ideas on how to take advantage of it, but some professional advice would be very welcome
First, thank you for a great deal on the Control Freak. As an engineer I appreciate the control the Control Freak gives. The precise control that not only the Joule gives, the Control Freak does too. I appreciate how the cooker is so well made. Having the best tools, whether knife, pot, or cookery makes the experience better and an average cook like me even better. I find the content on Chefsteps gets better all the time and how well it has evolved from the joule. Thank you very much for what you and the Chefsteps provides.
That has changed. Breville warranty now covers home use for the Control Freak
