It's amazing how powerful that is. I shall smack my friends' bottle tops in the name of science now instead of just to annoy them!
When done with a carbonated liquid the CO2 in the liquid will take of the shock wave of the cavitations bubbles causing the beverage to explode out of the top opening. For the bottle to actually break with a smack, there must be very little to no gasses that want to escape the liquid, ie it must be flat. You might be able to sneak a glass bottle with water in it to show this bar trick off.

Yes, doing this with a carbonated beverage will just make a big mess.
