Joule + Raspberry Pi?!

You bet! I had a few things laying around the house and decided to see if I could make everything play well together. That's right...I can now control my Joule with a Raspberry Pi! (video in link)

Here is the setup (left to right):

Anker SoundCore Sport XL speaker for audio output
Raspbery Pi 2 Model B running Amazon Alexa with...
Edimax Wi-Fi adapter to give the Pi wireless connectivity
Blue Snowball mircophone for audio input
RAVpower portable charger to power the Raspberry Pi

It was fairly easy to set up with all the tutorials available online. Once I got Alexa working, it was only a matter of adding the Alexa Companion app to my iPhone and enabling the Joule Skill. This might not be practical, but it's dang cool!

Very cool, "Alexa Dot" works too. Just download the app and enable the Joule skill. @HammeredChef_DEFINITELY_does_NOT_work_at_22134 has one (or two). I hope he will post the details.

I have two dots, one first gen and one second gen. Both play nice with the Joule once you figure out what commands you can give.

Sorry for such a long delay folks, but it was the weekend, and I did finally have my Joule in hand. As I said, this isn't a practical situation by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, to purchase all the components for this particular build (minus Joule) would run about $206...far more than an Echo Dot, or even a full size Echo. That's counting the bluetooth speaker ($60) that I used. It could always be done with a much less spendy speaker.

As far as a tutorial...I'm not sure I have the time to write my own. This is the tutorial that I followed to get the Raspberry Pi programmed and ready with Alexa (including the working trigger word). It's a pretty lengthy process that requires registering as an Amazon developer and copying a lot of info. Not difficult, but time consuming.

Once you get that going, it's as simple as installing the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet, adding your device, and then finding the Joule skill and enabling it. If anyone is still interested, feel free to ask any questions!
