Chris Young addresses the issue in this

.
TL;DR: Placing your pot on a towel or silicon trivet will greatly reduce acoustic amplification.

response and also get the water above the circulating spout.

Alex, it's very difficult to judge from the video, but a couple of troubleshooting suggestions:
(1) Filling above the spout definitely makes Joule circulate more quietly.
(2) One thing we've observed is that certain pots seem to have just the right shape and be made from the right material to resonate at just the right frequency to amplify the motors natural frequency—this is something we're still investigating in our lab. You might try it on a different vessel and see if the sound is diminished. You might also try it unclipped from the side of the pot and see if that lowers the noise level. If so, Joule is using your pot to amplify its sound.
(3) At higher cooking temperatures, especially above 75C, Joule will accelerate its motor to increase the rate of circulation. You might check to see if your Joule is quieter at a lower temperature.
(4) I'll have our engineering team pull your motor's telemetry data to see if anything looks unusual, and if so we'll be in touch. [Update: motor data is within spec]

I recognize that your data set will be pretty small initially, but im REALLY excited what trends you guys find in the data mining to make the recipes and user experience even better.

".... telemetry data...."
Ya gotta love it!!

So far with the two videos posted on the noise concern people have offered suggestions to reduce the high pitched whirring noise but no one who says their Joule is "whisper quiet" has piped up that the videos represent a louder Joule than what they are experiencing. I keep waiting for that and it isn't happening. I'm going to infer by all the advice being given that the advice givers have Joules that are indeed more quiet.
Is this a fair assumption? It would be helpful if those who have already volunteered that their Joules are quiet would confirm that the videos represent louder Joules than theirs...given that perception/experience of noise can be very subjective.
Thanks!

Thanks Chris! Here are my results to the troubleshooting:
1) Less noise from impacting water, but still the same mechanical whirring noise is there.
2) Moved to a oblong tall plastic container, moved the Joule into different positions while heating and constant temp, noise remains the same in all positions.
3) Heated up to 50C and then to 90C sounds remains the same
4) That would be great
Additionally, I removed the propeller, everything looked fine in the heating chamber. I changed the water to distilled water, no change. I brought it up to 60C with 1:1 water vinegar mixture.
Joule is still working fine but was just curious to the noise. It does sound like the brushless motor, and the noise actually sounds like it is coming from the top where the button is.

Alex, it looks like your Joule is performing within spec. One thing we have found is that motor noise often diminishes after Joule has been used for a while. If things change and it gets worse, please file a support ticket from within the app.

My Joule makes a very similar or near exact noise. The description you provided is how I would have described the noise as well. I tried all of the troubleshooting suggestions, different water bath vessels, and/or hoped it might just need a break in period; however, the noise remains. I contacted Ellen and they are sending me a new one. You are not the only one with this issue.

Wouldn't say mine is whisper quiet but it is pretty quiet - a lot quieter than that. My MacBook Pro's fan is far louder, if that comparison helps.
Alex_Drinkwater_447167
Wow, yeah I can hear mine whirring away in the next room.

Me too. Sounds like some are noisier than others. Has gotten quieter as I use it more, but still whiny
Charles_Rzadkowolski_457145
Yeah, I might even say mine is louder than yours. I'm able to hear it clear across the room

I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. First, I am pleased to know that hum is common so I can relax about the noise. I received my retail version of Joule with the first round of pre-orders. I used it right away, I was so excited. It was dead silent the first couple of weeks I used it. But wanting to ensure my device was absolutely clean, and after a couple of mishaps with leaking bags and such, I decided to circulate warm, soapy water for about 20 minutes with a cool rinse of plain water for another 20 min or so. I set aside to dry and the next few days of use resulted in a "squeaky wheel" noise. The squeak eventually went away, but the louder whirring noise had manifested and is now part of the norm.
I picked up an Anova during the holidays so I'd be able to use something with manual controls. That thing is so loud compared with the Joule, but when all holes are submerged, it is so quiet, I have to lean in and listen to make sure it's still operating.
All in all, I am very pleased with Joule and I prefer that over the other devices. Thanks ChefSteps!

My new Joule has been running for 15 hours. The noise is piercing to me. I could hear it loudly in the bedroom. Very annoying.
katie_ruelas_669556
I have used my Joule 4 times and it was quiet as a mouse! Now it is making a high whirring sound. It is super annoying especially when I'm using it to make osso bucco which needs to cook for 24 hours and I am having people over tonight while its whistling away. I'm not liking the noise one bit! ChefSteps, I googled a solution and stuck it in a solution of water/vinegar. It did not help. What else can be done. I will take it back if there is no solution - I can't live with this noise.
