Got my Joule today. Soooooo excited. Spent whole day cooking. Smokerless ribs are great. Egg calculator really works.

Going to use my small cooler as a bath, so question: a while ago you said "We're making a clamp (seen here in render form) that attaches to Joule and easily grabs onto thicker-walled vessels like coolers. It spans a 2.5" wall when opened up all the way and also works with containers like the larger Cambros that have thin walls with bigger lips/handles."

Is there any fresh estimates before I've cut my cooler into pieces?

Don't mangle your cooler. Until then you can epoxy a big washer, courtesy of Hammered Chef, to the bottom where joule will reside... or you can mod a wire coat hanger to drape over the edge ... I was just going to bend a small piece of aluminum sheet metal so it can clip to that.

I've attached the washer already but then I couldn't close the lid. Don't like wasting lots of energy for evaporation.

Oh... well in that case you can cut some closed cel foam to cover the surface area or I've used bubble wrap to lay on the surface with good results. Higher temps will get a little water into the bubbles but oh well you can reuse them for a while!

Closed cell foam with a hole cut out for Joule works great. It floats on the top of the water and insulates. Ping pong balls work too. I too am waiting for the cooler clip. BTW if your cooler is too deep you can use a full can of your favorite canned goods to raise the height of Joule and Joule's magnet will stick to the can lid. I used a can of pumpkin to cook a bunch of ribs in a cooler, it worked.

Coolers are inexpensive and the most thermally efficient container for sous vide cooking. I have three sizes, (28, 14 & 9 quarts), that I use and have cut round holes in them to lower my sous vide cooking device into the water. I also removed the hinging mechanisms, which in the two smaller capacity coolers was a matter of cutting a lug from one side of the lid. The lids in the two smaller coolers are not insulated so I plan on spraying foam insulation into them in the next few days.

In the next few days I will make a post on the detailed steps I took to adapt these coolers to the most energy efficient sous vide setups. In the mean time my advice is to go ahead and "mangle" your cooler as much as you want. I paid $9, $15 and $24 for my coolers and with minor modifications they function as regular coolers and as the most kickass sous vide cooking containers.

Thanks for mentioning closed cell foam. I just realized that my old 5mm wet suit is made of the stuff. The torso part is definitely big enough to cover the surface area (lol). I might have to re purpose it for a higher cause...
