Does Joule need an altitude adjustments

are the joule recipe times and or temperatures affected by high altitudes?? like in Santa Fe at 7,500 ft?? i've made three recipes using Chefsteps or Joules given times and temps.. Each was 4 degrees cooler than target temperature after "given" time... co-inkydink??? just curious...

Altitude should only affect the boiling point, not the set temperature, at any reasonable altitude and temperature. For example, if you are in Leadville, CO (~10,000 ft.) and try to sous vide at 195 °F, it won't work. However, if you want to maintain a temperature of 192 °F, you won't need Joule...just boil the water, and maintain the water level.

@Emmett_Barton_12803 any thoughts or input on this one. Does Joule automatically compensate for temperature at altitude? I know Joule has an altimeter and in my case at almost 2,000 feet Joule's top temperature that I can set is 205°, even though Joule can be set at 208°F at sea level.

As far as I know as long as it's sealed all should be a go. And times and temps not altered. Temp doesn't change but time to reach that temp may as product always has water content. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

The water content inside the product itself also has to come to temp. With that in jind, would that not prolong the time to reach that temp?

No. Temperature is still temperature. The only significant difference atmospheric pressure makes is if you're approaching the boiling point. If you're cooking a steak in a 130F water bath, you're cooking a steak in a 130F water bath. Altitude won't make a difference in how long it takes to come to temperature.

I don't know for sure either. Joule is very smart so I wonder if it could be compensating for altitude?

Joule doesn't adjust cooking programs based on altitude. Joule does, however, adjust its max possible set temp based on altitude in order to prevent boiling your steak!

Hi Toby, Emmett Barton just posted that Joule does not adjust cooking for altitude. I would first make sure that your thermometer is accurate. You can do this by putting it in boiling water, you will need to check as see what the pointing point is at your altitude. Then check it in ice water it should read 32'F. Here is a link to describe how to check your thermometer. If your thermometer checks out I would submit a support ticket (submit a request) here.
