Sous Vide bags for large prime rib roasts

Hi folks,

I'm considering sous vide to cook a 3 prime rib roast (weighing approximately 10 lbs with bone). The only problem is, I can't seem to find a large enough bag that could hold the roast. The largest one I've seen on Amazon is a 1 gallon bag measuring at around 11" x 14" (I don't own a vacuum sealer machine, so the rolls won't work for me). Does anyone have any suggestions on where else to look? Thanks!

Ziploc sells 2-gallon bags that might work for you. I've never seen them in a store, but you can find them on Amazon.

You might also consider asking the butcher to put it in a cryovac bag for you.

Thanks Brandon. The rib recipe on the Joule app seems to suggest that the seams of ziploc bags may fail when cooking heavy food, although it did say I can use double bags in a pinch. If I can't find anything, I may end up doing that, but I was hoping to use a heavier bag if available just in case.

Turkey roasting bags work great for me when I need to cook heavier items. Have not had a single one leak.

Dan I've triple bagged large roasts (twice-I was traveling and no sealer available) so the 2 gallon should work (that's what I used as well).

I found some 2 gallon bags at Wally World (Walmart). Smart and Final and Cash and Carry has them also, both of those a restaurant supply stores that sell retail. Ziplocs work fine under temperatures of 158°F (still not a bad idea to double bag), above that temperature is were the seams can fail. Standing Rib Roasts are done in the safe for Ziploc zone.

Grant prepared a full suckling pig in a garbage bag. He used Glad white garbage bags. Maybe that would work.

I order two sizes of Vacmaster bags that have served me well... 10"x13" for most everything, and then 16"x26" for anything bigger (think leg of lamb, brisket, prime-rib, etc...) (and the bigger one can be cut down if it is too long).

If you know someone who has a Foodsaver you could ask them to make you a custom length bag from the Foodsaver rolls as opposed to the pre-cut bags.

Hi Nico - thanks for the tip! The only problem is Vacmaster only sells these bags in large quantities. Of course, if you're willing to sell me a few you have on hand, I'd be happy to pay for them :-)....

That's ... an interesting idea. Never saw that article until just now. I think turkey bag (as recommended below) or doubling up on a two gallon ziploc bag may be the way to go for the size of my rib roast.

True, it is a lot... the 16"x26" are only 150, so that's not too bad, but the smaller ones are 1000! I have shared the cost with some neighborly sousviders, so maybe you can go in with a few, or start off the wave within your neighborhood, then sell them 250 at a time

Foodvacbags.com sells them in 100's. They are good bags, I've bought them for a long time time, both mesh for edge sealers and chamber vac bags.

I know this is an old post but I came in here looking for a solution for a cooking bag for a 5 rib 14+ lb standing rib roast. It's Christmas eve and the clock is ticking for picking up something from the store. So there was no solution except for the freezer large size zip bags and I had leakage on one round with zip lock bags and it's Christmas dinner and I just didn't want to chance it. I do have s vacuum sealer. So the roast was to wide to fit in the bag. So what I did was take two lengths of bag that would work length wise and cut open one side put them together and seal them up into a bigger bag. I did a water test found one leak and sealed it. Got my roast in and vacuumed out all the air and now it sits with the fresh herb and garlic salt pepper over night...….. Had to share maybe it will help someone else out.
