What Tastes Better? (Lobster)
Michael_Maggio__88939
There is an ongoing debate in our house on which one tastes better. Here is your chance to get in on the debate. Keep in mind this debate is on taste only for a simple steamed or boiled lobster. Drawn butter optional.

My vote might just be because I grew up near Shediac. I wouldn't pass up either though.

The western rock lobster
(Panulirus cygnus)
gets my vote.
Now if the poll is opened to crayfish then the
Marron
wins hands down
.
If it has to be seafood from saltwater then the green lipped abalone trumps the blue manna crab, which just beats the lobster
.
The
dhufish
and
King George Whiting
rate very high, but unless you are from WA or Southern Australia respectively, you most likely have not heard of them.

Noble crayfish gets my vote...

I'm more of a spiny lobster guy.
I read recently that the cold water lobsters in the northeast were once considered trash fish by the locals (this is colonial times, mind you), and that it was a common staple food in prisons of the day; one prison even had a minor protest as inmates recoiled at having to eat lobster for something like 17 days in a row. With the advent of refrigeration and rail, cities more than a day's horse ride from the coast were introduced to the yummy crustacean and it was only then that it became a luxury item.
(Actually that sounds like an Alton Brown knowledge drop, maybe that's where I heard it)

The cheapest and most plentiful food becomes the "peasants" choice and is, unfortunately, often considered 'trash."
