This
is the style of knife guards I use for my knives.
The slip on sheaths like
this
are a trip to the ER in waiting. You end up cupping this style in your hand to put the knife in which means any slip or breaking of the sheath (they beak at the fold easily) means its off with your shoes to count to ten.
I found these at my local restaurant supply store for less than PB Prince.

Edge guards of one type or another are pretty important. My favorite option is a saya, which is the traditional wooden cover used in Japan. The only downside is that it needs to be carefully fit to the knife. The clamshell design is a decent edge guard, though they tend to loosen up over time. If it begins to loosen, throw it away and replace it, since it will shortly break the tip of the knife stored in it. I like the simple folded plastic style quite a lot. It is very versatile (fits a wide range of knives). So long as it is a good, tight fit, it is a very safe edge guard style. Like the clamshell style, if it loosens or bends it needs to be replaced. In general, edge guards are designed for storage in a drawer or in a knife bag. They are not safe for carrying the knives without a knife bag.
