Post a video of your Joule's noise?

I've received a couple of replacement Joules after my first two seemed quite noisy, (similar whirring motor noise to what others have mentioned), and the replacements are noisy too.

I'm trying to figure out if I'm just crazy, or if the devices I'm receiving are unusually noisy. Could someone post a video of their Joule in operation, to see if I'm just expecting too much silence out of my device?

I've read other peoples concerns about the noise their joule is making and someone here did make a recording. Mine makes the same noise but it seems to me that it's a normal level of sound and not anything to be concerned about. It's just the normal sound you'd expect from this kind of device. Not 100% silent, just a normal whirling. Sometimes its pulsatile other times I don't notice it at all but it's nothing that I would suspect as a defect. Of course I'm only speaking from my own experience, others may feel differently.

There are about half a dozen threads scattered about Joule noise and three videos showing the whirl. The frustrating part is that people keep commenting that their's is "whisper quiet". No one has actually posted a video showing whisper quiet. Mine sounds just like the examples of loud. Can someone who has a "whisper quiet" one please post a video so those of us with loud ones can compare?

I can't tell if that's loud because of how close your camera is, but I think that's about how loud mine was before the recent firmware update. My Joule is noticeably more quiet now after the update. I would record the sound of mine now but it's currently at a friend's place cooking a 48 hour chuck roast for Christmas.

Here's mine:

I thought mine was quieter, but this morning while hearing water, I thought it sounded a bit different, as far as amount of motor whir.

My Joule is relatively new, only having used it a total of 4 times in the past month of ownership.

I'd compare the sound level to a 10 year old refrigerator when the fan is operating to circulate Cook's air into the box, or sound level-wise, maybe soft conversation.

I can hear mine from the living room. I'm comparing it to a first gen Sansaire and my Sansaire is much quieter. On the Sansaire I only hear the water moving and a low hum. Maybe it's a pitch thing but given what everyone is saying, I keep thinking it should at least be as quiet as the Sansaire.

anyone else with a whisper quiet? So far all the videos make the same noise and it's loud...so maybe loud is normal

Mine is very quiet. If I'm in close proximity I can hear it; from an adjacent room, hardly at all.

I'm having the exact same experience as you. The Joules I've had have been what I consider to be annoyingly noisy, more so than my Anova One because the pitch is higher. I cannot use it in the kitchen without hearing it upstairs. Granted, I have excellent hearing but I am having a hard time getting over the disappointment of not being able to run it inside my house without covering the noise by playing music... and who wants to do that at night?!

I also would appreciate if the forum members would confirm if the videos represent their experience or if their Joules are less noisy. I thought I had asked this question in previous posts but Wes did it more clearly.

Yes, I've done everything CS recommends, have been in communication with CS and have an open ticket on the issue. It looks like they're having some more immediate issues with total failure so I am being patient while waiting for a response. The update has not helped reduce the noise for me.

I think Wes, King, and I are in the same boat: we're trying to manage our expectations. If everyone's Joules are this noisy, we'd find it easier to get over our disappointment. But, if people's Joules are more quiet, I, at least, am having a hard time with having a noisy one. I also feel like I'm being a PITA b/c I've already gone down the replacement route and am still not happy. I've gone so far as to ask CS if I can throw a styrofoam cooler over my setup to muffle the noise. (No answer. Perhaps not a good idea b/c of heat buildup.)

So CS responded to my case and informed me that the noise level in the videos below are the normal and expected noise level. I guess "whisper quiet" to someone is loud as heck to others...I am very disappointed that a brand new product like this is so loud compared to my first gen Sansaire

I'll try to post a video of my units. FWIW, my first unit, which was quite noisy initially, has quieted down a lot, and is now truly WHISPER QUIET. Like, I have to walk up to it and hold my ear to the unit to hear it. The other one isn't so quiet, but I'm hopeful that over time it will quiet down. I'm putting the other unit downstairs, and running it continuously for a week to see if continuous use will quiet it down some too

Thanks for sharing your experience. Mine is louder than the old refrigerator in my kitchen. I'm really bummed by the manufacturing variability.

I went to their Black Friday onsite event and listened to the Joules they had running. I swear they were all quiet, but then started questioning myself upon returning home. Perhaps the ambient noise with a bunch of people around covered the sound, but I stuck my head right into some of the pots.

I keep questioning if its just me being picky... which is why I really appreciate when those who have quiet Joules are willing to confirm that these videos show more noisy Joules. I'll try to post a video of my current Joule but have to figure out where I can upload it.

Here's a way that might help. Download a decibel meter from iOS or android App Store. I bought the one wirecutter used in their testing, but a free one I downloaded delivered similar results. SPLnFFT Noise Meter by Fabie n Lefebvre

So I've done some testing and I think can conclusively say based on the videos that there is nothing "wrong" with my joule. Here are some of my experiments:

Joule in 1QT - 59db

Joule in 8QT - 54db

Joule in 12QT - 51db

I repeated the tests with my Sansaire and found the Sansaire to be more intense (higher db) but lower pitch.

I think the smaller fan blades and motor create a higher pitch sound that I can hear from farther away whereas the Sansaire is much lower pitch and I can't hear it.

Obviously the size of the container and volume of water also affected the sound which likely explains the variation in people's definition of "whisper quiet". I assume someone using at 24qt coleman cooler is going to find the noise significantly less.

Started up another thread about joule operating noise. Mine brand new white Joule (via amazon) is annoying. But other people's seem pretty quiet.
