Are the forum categories set? I find the current categories a little non-intuitive, for example, if I have a question where does that go? Maybe in recipes if it's about a ChefSteps recipe, but if it's more general or about a technique? Seems like the correct category is ''unstable'' in the post content: similar posts might belong in other categories.

An alternative idea (not obviously better) would be to separate by post purpose: "ask a question," "share what you've made," "non-culinary," and so forth. Within each group there might be further breakdown, e.g. questions could include a section for gear questions, one for food science questions, and so forth.

Then again, this may be overcomplicated...

Interesting idea Evan. The categories are up for change as everything else is, but we need to stay mindful that on smaller devices(phones) we need succinct titles. 

Subcategorization is interesting(tags are the most common answer to this), and allows us to do some interesting data stuff. For instance, if someone continuously answers baking questions throughout all the different categories, and answers questions on ChefSteps recipes about baking, we could learn from that and prioritize baking posts in her feed.

To answer your question though, categories aren't set and we'll be changing them around. For instance, announcements and bugs are #2 and #3, but that's only because it's in beta.
