Must be because the profile name isn't unique. Since ChefSteps only requires a name and email, there can be multiple people with the same name. This would make distinguishing these individuals difficult by just using their handle (ie. their user name), since there is no guarantee that a user would upload a photo and the associated email addresses aren't publicly released. ChefSteps could just make it so that every user can be linked, and make the end user do the work to determine which person they want to tag, but I can imagine how that would make the user interface look a little messy.

Actually it seems like the call for the drop-down menu is bugged. At the end of writing my previous comment, I too was unable to get it to pull up the user tagging menu after the @ sign. When I reloaded the page the issue was gone, even when I tried replicating the situation (I had a new post menu open at the time, so I originally thought maybe the new post was interrupting and calls from the comments), and it only comes back up when a new post/comment has been open for a period of time. Case and point, at the beginning of this comment I could link myself by typing @Peter and then selecting my profile, but now it doesn't hyperlink to anything. I don't do front-end stuff, so I can't speculate very well on what is going wrong, but bug confirmed.
